Regular vs. Maternity Leggings

Hi, everyone. I'm a FTM so forgive me for asking, but for those of you who have gone through pregnancy before, are the maternity-specific leggings really necessary? I have read so many comments about you will live in leggings once you get far enough along, but I'm wondering if it is worth it to shell out the extra money on maternity leggings, or just go with "regular" leggings? Input?

Re: Regular vs. Maternity Leggings

  • I bought regular h&m leggings in a size up and I find they are nice and loose around the waistline. However I am only 20 weeks and not sure what it will be like at 7-9 months. I'd advise just waiting until you have to buy them and try both types on.

  • I'm 21 weeks and live in my maternity leggings! Huge difference! The high rise waist is super comfortable and also makes ur bump look smoothe and round. Low rise leggings started to really bother my stomach.
  • I lived in leggings before getting pregnant, lol.

For me, I used regular leggings up until around 6 months.  Then I switched to maternity and they were honestly so much more comfortable.  I liked that the panel would cover my belly completely because as I got bigger, my shirts weren't long enough to cover my bump so having that coverage from the panel was nice.

And I also liked how they made my bump look smoother.
  • I have a couple of pairs of regular leggings in one size up. I find the Lauren Conrad ones from Kohls have an elastic enough band to hold up well, but are not restricting enough to put pressure on my belly and hurt. I have a few pairs from Target and the waistband hurts my belly now, so I don't wear them. I did buy a pair of maternity leggings that go over the belly and am in LOVE! Im 17w now and will be thankful, I got the over the belly kind in a few more weeks.

This. I wore those maternity leggings all pregnancy and also post partum. Super comfy, and they have good cheap ones at Old Navy. As I got further along, the waistline on regular leggings cut into my bump in a weird place that made it highly visible through whatever top I was wearing. I'm back into normal clothes now but still wear them around the house because I love them.
  • I found really cheap cropped maternity leggings on eBay, they are so comfortable. I'm 29 weeks now and regular ones are uncomfortable even rolled down under the bump.
  • Maternity ones won't give you a muffin top where regular ones might since you tend to get a little squishy around the midsection, nice bump or not. There are full panel and demi panel leggins available. I have some from Old Navy that were demi panels and I really liked them. I don't know that you'll live in them by the end, but I wore them a lot along with my maternity jeans.

  • Maternity Leggings all the way. After a while the regular one always bother me. Plus, like a previous post they smooth out you bump. If you don't have them now, I bet you will break down and get them
  • Maternity leggings for the win!
I got a pair of leggings in a bigger size during my first tri bloat stage, but they don't really fit right, and the band bothers me now.
Maternity leggings are so comfy, I basically live in them. Destination maternity had a sale, I was able to get some regular black ones for $15 each, totally worth it!

  • I so need maternity legging now.......
  • I got a few pairs of maternity leggings on sale at Destination Maternity. Best pants ever.
  • I love my maternity leggings. They dip in the front so the waistband doesn't rub or even touch my belly!
  • I love my maternity leggings! Make me feel so much better, and as they are high rise you don't have the annoying silly looking line on your bump like you do with normal leggings. Definatly worth getting some!
  • Picked up some mat leggings from motherhood and they are very loose... I am a UK 16 and the leggings in the normal store go up to 22 so I will prob keep trying those until they don't work

  • I usually can get away with going up sizes. but the struggle is real this time around. I might need to bite the bullet and actually get some maternity.

  • I got a pair of maternity leggings from Target and they are so comfy. They come high in the front to cover bump, but stay low in the back to help stay cool. And they stay up really well.
  • Maternity leggings all the way!! So much more comfortable to wear. I got most of my maternity leggings and jeans 2nd hand online instead of brand new
  • My normal legging have started to roll down at the front where my bump is, this becomes uncomfortable when sitting as it kind of cuts in, even though they still fit me. I'm only 23 weeks, so I'm thinking this is going to be a real issue come 30 weeks
  • I live in leggings regardless but so far my regular ones still fit. I'm sure once I hit the 6-8 month mark it will be more comfortable to get maternity ones. I'm waiting until I can't fit into them anymore, I notice they are a tad tighter in the upper thigh since that is where I gain the most weight in my hips/thighs but I'm okay for right now. I would use regular until you can't anymore or it's really uncomfortable for you then buy 2-3 pairs if you wear them a lot. That's what I will do.

  • I'm a FTM as well, but I'm so glad I bought two pairs of nice maternity leggings (one full length and one cropped).  I got these from Destination Maternity and they are pricey but seriously so flattering and comfortable, plus I was able to get them on sale using a 20% coupon: https://www.destinationmaternity.com/Product.asp?Product_Id=16432Z10653&MasterCategory_Id=MC28

Everyone's lifestyle is different, but it was worth it for me personally because I can wear them to workout or just to lounge around the house, plus the long black ones are nice enough to wear out in public with a long sweater.  But if you don't ever work out or wear leggings in general, then it probably isn't worth it.
  • I wore regular leggings through my previous pregnancy with full term twins and never had an issues. They were cheaper then maternity ones and I didn't find them uncomfortable at all.

  • am I the only one who is anti-leggings around here?  I can't stand them pregnant or not!
  • I live in my maternity leggings! I work at Victoria's Secret so naturally pre-pregnancy I had a lot of yoga pants and leggings, but I'm carrying him SO LOW that even my largest pair of "lounge wear" leggings were constricting. But I'm all about not buying things until you need them, so unless your regular leggings are uncomfortable, there's no reason to give them up! :)
