Laundry!

sorry if there's is already a thread about this, but I couldn't seem to find anything about it. I'm curious to know if babies clothes should be washed separate from our clothes and use baby laundry detergent.
What are everyone's thoughts..

Re: Laundry!

  • I've always washed them separate with Tide free and clear. I don't think you have to just a personal preference. I still wash my son's separate and he's almost 3, I'll wash the baby stuff with the toddlers and keep mine and SO's together. If I have to wash my son's and its not a full load then I'll either throw in his blankets or some of my stuff

  • Get the color catchers!! Especially if you're having a girl and have a lot of pinks. Something always bleeds no matter how many times you've washed it. And that way you can wash the colored outfits with the plain white ones. Life savers!!
  • I will most likely wash baby's clothes with mine when I can. I use all free and clear as my normal detergent so I'm.not worried. I always wash my boyfriend's clothes separately because he works in construction and I don't want whatever he gets covered with on my clothes, let alone a baby's.

I wash my daughter's clothes separately because her clothes will make a full load on their own and it's easier to sort. I don't use anything separate as far as different detergent for her. We've always used All Free & Clear, even when she was a newborn.

  • I wash DS's clothes separate. Like a PP said, his clothes make a load on their own. Plus since they're going to a separate room it makes it a little easier for me to just fold them separately.

When he was a newborn and I was breastfeeding I would wash a lot of my shirts and bras with his clothes. Then I'd often leave spare tees in his room for accidents (I frequently needed them with spitup and when he'd vomit so it made it easy to quickly change my shirt while I already had DS there getting him cleaned up.
  • Ftm, but from my babysitting experience I will definitely be washing her clothes separately. Babies go through so many outfits a day it's crazy! My husband and I usually do our own laundry anyways so it just makes sense.
  • I recommend to get a lingerie bag (mesh laundry bag) to wash their socks and other small items in. If the washer and dryer can eat adult socks just imagine how easily the baby socks would disappear.
Yes! We had one of those for the tiny little baby socks.

  • I wash my kids seperate from our laundry and use all free and clear for their stuff.
  • I also highly recommend the lingerie bag for baby socks. Otherwise they get lost pretty easily. I still wash DDs clothes by themselves. She has enough for a load and its just easier to keep them separate. We use the all free and clear for all of our laundry.

  • I have allergies so I've always used free and clear. My husband washes is own work clothes typically and I wash any of his regular clothes he didn't wash with the work clothes. I do use mesh laundry bags for any specialty socks (smart wool, running technical socks). I also use mesh laundry bags for anything I don't dry. I will wash them with my clothes if the color, fabric and dirtiness is similar (if the babies stuff is gross from an accident I'll most likely separate it!).

Another great reason for washing the baby's stuff separately! ;)

I used to do my girls' stuff separate from ours when they were little for the same reasons everyone else mentioned. They made a full load on their own, and it was easier to sort. I like to sort by colour as much as I can, and their stuff was almost always a MUCH lighter colour than ours was! They had a few darker coloured items which I would add to our loads as I did them. We've also been using Tide Free & Clear for years due to MH's allergies to some other brands, so I didn't have to worry about a reaction. We haven't bought a special detergent since the first bottle when DD1 was born (probably a gift) because by the time the bottle was done, we realized it wasn't necessary. :)

Also...yes, Yes, YES! to the lingerie bag for tiny socks (and scratch mitts and little hats and, and, and...) so helpful!!

  • @elbou I already have 5 mesh bags but maybe I'll buy a few more! So I can keep little socks sorted in the hamper! :)
  • Since most babies I see with socks have lost one or one is about to fall off I'm boycotting socks that have multiple colors and patterns in the package! I'm only registering for plain white socks or crew socks with grey toes and heels. If I need cute socks for a special occasion I'll buy a pair for that outfit, if white will look weird...and I will wash them in the mesh bag with the special occasion outfit!
  • Thanks for the tips everyone!
  • I must be about the only one who washes all our clothes together.

When my son was born we had coin-op laundry in our condo, and his clothes were so tiny we didn't see the need to pay to do an extra load just to keep his stuff separate. Now we have our own W/D, but are in the habit of just washing by color, or heat setting.

The only thing I separate are my husband's "dirty job" clothes (he always has a project he's doing around the house or outside). I probably won't change my habits for #2...it just seems like extra work for no benefit.
