Formula Issues?!?!

Anyone else out there having a hard time finding a formula that works for your LO? Mine is almost 6 weeks old and has been in 3 types... Still so gassy and uncomfortable . Poor thing cries all the time after feelings and wakes from naps because of it.

He has been on Similac Soy , Similac Sensative and Enfamil Nutramigen.

Re: Formula Issues?!?!

  • Yes. Ask your doctor about your baby being lactose and soy intolerant. It appears that's our issue (which means breastmilk is pretty much a no go as well without me exclusively pumping and treating the milk for lactose) and my baby has pretty much been constipated for days at a time without poop and is so gassy and it hurts him to pass gas or poop. He screams when he poops or passes gas.

We just switched to the exclusive pumping and treating my milk with Colief drops and Similac Alimentum which is hella expensive today to see if this helps.

  • Did you switch to spy on your own or through a recommendation of your pedi? My lo is very gassy and constipated as well.

  • Try enfamil AR. I love that stuff! Works like a charm!! He doesn't spit up or have bad gas anymore.
  • How long are you giving LO time to adjust to a different formula before switching? I tried switching brands with mine and she did NOT take to it well at all. I immediately went back to Similac and just tried different things within that brand. Is your pediatrician leading you through this or are you experimenting on your own?
Make sure you ask your pedi about their recommendations (and possibly about getting a prescription formula) and give your LO plenty of days to adjust to different formulas before switching again.

  • We were on similac sensitive and it was terrible on her. I switched her, on my own, to Gerber Soothe. It was wonderful. No more gas or constipation. But she developed a milk allergy and now we are on Nutramagin. Soooo expensive as you know! However, she's good on it.

  • We are in our 3rd formula also. Enfamil gentlease is what we are in now and it seems to be helping his gas and fussiness a lot.
  • Are you sure baby doesn't have reflux? I had similar issues and after looking at symptoms of reflux I took her into the doctor. Sure enough she has it and that's why she is seeming so uncomfortable. I thought it was gas the whole time, I felt so bad!

This. Mine has reflux and I thought it was gas the whole time. I do supplement formula at night and she has been doing better on enfamil newborn vs similac supplement
  • Damn do all our babies have reflux? !?!?
  • We are on the 3rd as well. From enfamil infant to soy to nutramegin. The soy worked great for a few days then he stated acting up again and same with the nutramegin. We added prune juice back in (had it with the soy then got rid of it with the nutramegin) just recently and it seems to be helping. I really don't see him arching his back so I doubt it's reflux.. thinking it is just something we need to out live. But the prune juice is making a big difference with making him poop and pass gas easier even though he is no longer constipated like he was on the soy!
  • We thought our baby had reflux too and we're just about to switch off of Similac Sensitive because I thought he wasn't liking it.. But then all of the sudden he started eating great! I think his gas comes from constipation so we added a little prune juice to his diet and this seems to be helping. We also switched to Dr Browns bottles and had to try a few nipples until we found level 1 works the best. After going from breastfeeding exclusively to formula (not my choice) I have found it to be SO complicated! You really have to give it time and try out different bottles and nipples too because these impact gas as well. Good luck!
  • Just throwing this out there, but it takes 14days for baby to cycle out remnants of a formula or proteins in moms milk. So you won't know if the current formula works for babe or if cutting out dairy works until 2 weeks in because they could still be digesting the old stuff
  • All the switches have been at the recommendation of his pedi. I am losing my mind because I feel like my poor baby is so uncomfortable and I can't fix it. He has been on all the formulas for 5+ days before making any changes . We talked about reflux with his pedi but he doesn't seem to think that's it. I can hear and feel ass the gas bubbles in his tummy.
  • All the switches have been by his pedi.
  • We are on our 3rd as well. LO Started with Enfamil Newborn and couldn't keep it down and was very gassy/fussy. The Ped recommended Enfamil Gentlease or Enfamil AR. We did the Gentlease first and it worked out great. However, mama doesn't like Gentlease because the main ingredient is corn syrup. So now we are on the Enfamil AR and it's working pretty well too. But now I'm paranoid about the added rice at such an early age (5 weeks).
  • We had LO on Similac Sensitive Ready To Feed liquid since she was born and switched her to the Similac Sensitive powder formula. She immediately got gas from it. We used Dr. Brown bottles; we gave her Gripe Water. Nothing we did seemed to work. The powder formula was just too foamy vs the ready to feed liquid so we switched her back to the liquid. LO is doing so much better now, sleeping longer, and pooping again... Hallelujah! I've never been so excited to change poopy diapers!
