28 week rhogam shot / flu shot

had my 28 week check up today, blood pressure good, iron levels good, urine screen good, glucose test = passed with flying colors... All is well until I find out I have to get a flu shot and a rhogam shot because I'm o negative. So I joked around and asked for stickers or suckers or a character band aid. I though they were joking back when they asked what butt cheek I wanted the rhogam shot in. Come to find out it wasn't a joke, I got the shot in my butt and it burned like hell! So watch out ladies it's funny now but they're not kidding when they say it's going to burn!!!!! Lol then the flu shot in my arm. Got home and have been completely wiped out! I hope I'm not going to get the flu now...

Re: 28 week rhogam shot / flu shot

  • I have to have my second rohgam shot at my 28 week apt. That needle is freaking huge lol

  • Not to worry there is absolutely no way to get the flu from the flu shot! It's an inactivated virus type vaccine.
  • I feel for ya @Mueller01! This was my exact experience at my appointment yesterday, HOLY CHEEK BURN! My nurse said it's because it's ice cold. That plus the flu shot, plus the glucose test wiped me out as well. No fun getting poked, especially there!

  • I was given the option last pregnancy to have the rhogam shot in my arm which I opted for. It definitely hurts!! Is that not an option anymore?
  • I had my first rhogam shot in my butt at about 9 weeks and literally almost passed out. Obviously I wasn't watching but the minute she was done and I tried to get my purse to walk out of the room I started feeling super dizzy and she made me lay down. They SAY this is all in my head but I dunno, shots don't bother me like that.

Also, someone mentioned that you can't get the flu from the flu shot but a few years ago my grandma got her flu shot and within a few days had the flu and almost died (she's really old), I was her caregiver so I was there to see it all unfold. so I'm not sure how all that works but that can't be a coincidence especially when I've heard of it happening to other people.
  • It takes 2 weeks for the flu shot to take effect and for you to build up antibodies. Even though your grandma got the shot she either had the flu before she got the shot and didn't have symptoms or got it soon after, before she was immune to it. That's scary though that it can affect old and young so severely. I'm glad she's ok!
  • I barely felt the Rhogam shot in the butt, I thought the Tdap in the shoulder was more uncomfortable.
  • My rhogam shot was injected in my arm. All three pregnancies. That's weird they put the shot in your butt! Yikes! Although I agree with PP. The Tdap still has my arm sore from yesterday.
  • All my Rhogam shots with my last pregnancy were in the butt.  I also had progesterone injections, 1 in each butt cheek 3 times a week (6 butt injections a week) for like my entire pregnancy.  Luckily this pregnancy I'm taking the vaginal progesterone suppositories the entire way through.

  • Ugh!  I should not have read this as I have my 28 week appointment tomorrow and am O negative blood type.  At least I'll be prepared if the doctor tells me to drop my pants!

Quick question for those who got the flu shot.  Was it required by your doctor or was it optional?  I'd like to get it at my doctor's office tomorrow, if at all possible.  I'll be sure to ask either way but wanted to check with you fine ladies.  Thanks!
  • I got the rhogam shot today at my 28 week appointment and thought that the Depo Provera injections I got years ago hurt worse and stayed sore. The MA said rhogam shot had to go in my hip. I don't have to get tDap since I have gotten that one within the last year. My OB recommends the flu shot but said I didn't have to get it yet. I haven't gotten that one since I was 17 after I was in a car accident and decided to get it as my immune system was low from my injuries. Coincidentally, that's the last time I got the flu (got the shot in Nov and got the flu is Feb). I'm on the fence if I'll get the flu shot...

  • Just because you get the flushot does not mean you will not get the flu. Scientists have to first predict the stain of flu thats going to be prevalent this year. Even then you can still get flu. Just wont be as bad. Work as an RN in urgent care. We see it all the time!!!!
  • I think butt shots are more mentally scary to me than they really are painful...I always try to refuse them and but the doctor always counters with threatening to admit me to the hospital and I say, "fine" and get the shot (typically steroids or antibiotics for out of control sinus infections in my case). If it is painful I think I'd prefer the butt to my arm! I agree with PP TDAP is no fun (the T=tetnus and it hurts!). I try to focus on keeping my muscle relaxed during the injection because I was told (or maybe I invented it in my head with my fear of needles...) that it will hurt less that way. Ugh, I have to do all this tomorrow.
