Maternity Clothes for Work

Has anyone lucked out with finding a store that sells nice maternity work clothes? Macy's, A Pea in the Pod, and Motherhood Maternity are all a little pricy, so I'm on the hunt for a new store. Also, have you just been buying larger sizes or clothes specifically made for moms-to-be?

Re: Maternity Clothes for Work

  • I honestly have bought two things on zulily and I also bought a few over sized shirts and sweaters from Dressbarn with a coupon (and they were on clearance)! I hope to get leggings and wear the hell out of them during the winter and late fall with sweaters, based on suggestions from perviously preggo mommies that had winter babies.

Try ASOS. They have free return shipping so you can try things on and return them if they don't fit. I also checked out some of the bargain stores (TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Ross, Burlington, etc.). It's hit or miss with Old Navy for me.

With my son, I only worked a few months into my pregnancy but I would say maternity pants are worth it. You can find tops that aren't necessarily maternity that look good. I preferred tunics. Empire waist dresses will last a long time as well. I also bought boots for the winter but I would wait on that since your feet will probably grow a bit.

My basic uniform was sweater dresses with leggings. If your work lets you get away with that, you probably won't need much in the way of maternity clothes.
  • Try Target or Old Navy. I usually wait until motherhood maternity has sales or I have coupons and then the prices are not so bad.
  • Pink Blush Maternity (website) has super cute stuff, and they have free shipping. It's a little pricey if you pay full price, but subscribe to their email-- they run so many deals you shouldn't ever have to pay full price.
  • I find those stores pricey too but I did buy 2 pairs of pants at Motherhood Maternity. I decided that it was worth it to me to have pants that I like and that fit me well to wear to work and I wear those and lots of skirts now every day. I wouldn't buy tops from them though. And actually I've bought a few items from places like Marshall's and Target that are just bigger but easily fit me like maternity clothes. I also go to local consignment stores because a few of them actually have really nice clothes.
  • I found some awesome stuff on clearance at Sears, got cute shirts for $5 and dresses for $10... never would have thought about going to Sears before!

  • It was worth it to me to throw down for nice pants at Motherhood Maternity. I really needed professional wear.
  • I just found plain collared dress shirts at landsend.com for 24.99 each. I find it surprising how hard it is to find work shirts. Most women have a baby at some point and many work, so you would think there would be a market for it.

  • Thanks for the tips, everyone! And I agree @NoelBird. I'm feeling inspired to start my own line of maternity work clothes because it seems like such a huge untapped market! I guess I need to learn a thing or two about fashion before I jump into that, though. :)
  • I've had my best luck at thrift/consignment stores. Much cheaper than full price retail, and most items are in really good condition.
  • I'm going to second the Goodwill comment! I've already gotten a total of 5 pairs of pants (2 jeans, 2 work pants, 1 corduroy), 3 collared shirts, and 2 dresses all for super cheap in great shape! I don't see the point of buying brand new expensive stuff only to wear it for a few months. Even if we have more kids, it's such a brief time that I can't imagine spending $$ on anything.
  • Burlington had a couple things. I bought a pair of black slacks and two shirts. It was very cheap, but quality isn't quite there. Target had a couple things, but I can dress very casual at work so I can get away with it. Not sure your situation but they do have dress pants online.
  • I had some (read: limited) success at Sears. Their prices were reasonable but the selection was very limited. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who is struggling to find work clothes that don't cost an arm and a leg but are work appropriate!

  • HandsomeJacksMom said, the bumps do feel kind of like a fish bumping into the side of a bowl. I'm pretty sure my LO is doing some sort of ninja moves in there for me to feel it so strong already! Or baby is headbutting me :)
  • I just ordered a bunch from old navy for my internship I have this semester. And they always have stuff on sale. I got a lot of basics.
  • I bought pants from Loft and Gap when they had a 50% off sale which they often have. Destination. Maternity has been having a bogo sale so I also bought a few dresses and 2 pairs of jeans. I bought cheap non maternity leggings in a larger size from h&m. Check out target too!
  • Check out thredup.com it's secondhand brand name clothing, sold on good or great condition (it lists if there are any flaws on the item). Great prices. I bought a few really great things and have been happy with it. Also a great mission and you can sell back your stuff.
  • Not advice but just a related note... I was running really late this morning so I just threw something on, not thinking about my rapidly expanding bump. The skirt fit fine while standing up but as soon as I sat on the train I realized that to be able to breathe while sitting, I have to pull the waistband up to basically the top of my rib cage. It's going to be a long day...

Try kohl's they carry Motherhood line called "Oh baby." I bought two work pants yesterday for a total of $50.00. I work at a bank and unfortunately leggings do not cut it unless I wear them under a dress...
  • I have gotten several things off zu lily really cheap. I just order a pair of jeans, 4 tops, 2 nursing tank tops and a nusing bra for just over $100
  • I also was going to suggest Kohls, that's where I got some stuff for work last time.

  • I see some women already mentioned Kohl's...I just ordered some good work clothes off their website. Definitely check it out.
  • I like Loft for maternity work clothes. A little expensive but they always have sales.
  • Anyone else so frustrated with all of the maternity clothes? I might just be having a hormonal moment but I just ordered a TON of stuff from ASOS, H&M and Destination Maternity and a lot of it didn't fit. I don't know if it's the European sizing on ASOS and H&M or what. I've returned stuff to Gap, Target, Old Navy and DM do many times. I'm annoyed I have to order all this stuff online as not a lot of stores carry maternity in stock. I hate all the colors everything comes in. Barely any of the pants are for short people (except for Jessica Simpson petite jeans...I love this woman now). The bras suck. I hate bows across the belly. The dresses are overpriced.

I had really great style pre-maternity I am at my wits end with all of this stuff. Just me?
  • @ChitownHusker definitely not just you. Most of what I find in the stores and online is not my style :(

  • Definitely not you! I hate bows too! Try Motherhood, Macy's. I take off the bows and ties on a lot of the dresses. H&M I never liked their clothes all seem cheaply made.

  • I would also generally recommend going to Old Navy stores in person. (vs online shopping)  I went to the one near me (in NYC), and the maternity section is in a corner by the baby stuff (it was a mess and looked like no one had been in there in months), but I got insane deals (and some of the stuff, esp dresses, are good for work).  I got a pair of pants for 97 cents (I almost fell over I was so happy), and tons of other items for less than $5 each!
  • I have had luck at JCPenny finding work clothes. They're not maternity, however they have a great selection of slacks that have an elastic waistband so it doesn't hurt my stomach. I bought them on size larger and they fit great. Plus, they're reasonably priced. Before any coupons they were only 24.99.
