Sleeping at night

hey mommas,

So my LO is 5w1day he sleeps between 7-8 hrs a night but with a feeding in the middle. So for example he ate at 10:30 bed by 11 and then got up at 3:20 fed back to sleep till 6:50. I thought this was pretty good for a baby. My friend has a LO who is only a day older and she's sleeping through the night.

So my question is.. Should he be sleeping longer? I thought he was a little too young to start a sleep schedule but we try and stick to the same routine daily. Haven't figured out naps yet. TIA!

  • Thank you ladies! So really there is no average it's just every baby is different.

Exactly - if you compare yourself to what other people's babies are doing you're just asking to drive yourself crazy! Your baby will surely be early on some milestones and late on others :). As long as they are within the "normal" range and your ped isn't concerned, there's nothing to worry about!
  • There isn't a normal. And even each child will switch it up from time to time at night. My 5 week old typically was doing four hour stretch and the two hours from then on like the previous posters but just last night she slept for 5.5 hours that first leg and three the second so hopefully we are moving in that direction. ;)
  • I hope so for you too!! lol
  • Yep, each baby is different and each night can be different. My LO is almost 5 weeks and has slept through the night a couple times and when she doesnt she usually goes down around 10 and then up around 2 or 3 and back up anywhere between 5 and 7.
  • That's pretty awesome for that age. Lucky you. It'll probably change though and be completely different in a few weeks! My DD didn't sleep all the way through the night til she was 2. Hoping for a better run this time!!
  • Its all varied.  My first was up every 2 hours on the dot until he was about 4 months old and didn't STTN until he was 10 months. This one only wakes 1 or 2 times a night at 5 weeks.  Even if they do start STTN early it can all change due to regressions, teething etc. Enjoy his long sleep stretches!
  • You ladies make me feel better. Mine is up 4 times a night wanting to feed every 90 minutes. I thought that was too often!
  • LO is 4w1d and sleeps 3 hours at a time at night. Down at 10 pm then up to eat at 1am and 4am, then up for good at 7a.m. I couldn't imagine a 5 hour stretch! LO was taking a good 30-60 minutes to go back down at night after each feeding, but broke that habit 2 nights ago and will go back down pretty much immediately after eating. Hopefully he doesn't revert!

Baby Will born 8/18. He's perfect.
  • I think it's different for every LO. My twins started sleeping through the night at 8 weeks old and slept til 8 or 9:30. It was AMAZING! Then DS2 will be 2 in December & he still wakes up during the night.. Right now DD2 is 13 weeks old tomorrow (adjusted age 5 weeks) & her sleeping pattern always changes. She is usually up every 3 hours to eat. Occasionally 4 hours & the other night when my husband put her to bed she slept for 7 hours! So I think the schedule your LO has now is great :)

DS is 6 wks today and this has been his schedule for a few weeks. I think we are hitting 6 wk growth spurt though.
  • My boy is 3 weeks old and he's been sleeping through the night since we got home from the hospital. I wake him up once to feed but there's been a few times he won't wake up no matter what I try. I'm glad I'm not the only one!
  • @taylorharris01 My LO is the same exact age! August 11th? He has exactly the same schedule as you do, which is interesting, and it sometimes varies within a half hour of those times depending on the night. We need him to keep gaining weight so the nights he decides to sleep longer I wake him, but he is pretty much like clockwork and I don't mind this schedule for now :)
  • We usually get one 4-5 hr stretch then 3 hrs. So 10-2/3 and then 6 and 9. Then we are up. She slept 7 last night !!!!!!!

  • Every kid is different! Our LO will sleep from 8/9pm until 11:45pm/12:15am then eat. He goes right back to sleep until 3/4am stays up for about 45 minutes to eat, then back down until 8:30ish. He's 7w1d now and every once in a while he will stretch out that 3/4am feeding to a later time. He used to be up every 2 hours so this is a vast improvement!
  • My DD's response: Sleeping at night?? Why would I do such a silly thing when I can just sleep during the day??
  • Every baby is different. I really wouldn't compare at this point.

  • My LO has slept through the night since birth. Her last feeding of the night is at 10:30-11:30pm and wakes up for her morning feeding at 6:30-7am. Then she eats every 2hrs after that. She gets at least 24oz per day.
