Preparing to TTC with PCOS

Hello everyone!

I am so excited about this community! I have been looking around for a few days, and it is so wonderful knowing that there is an amazing support system of other women going through similar situations! My question is for those of you who have conceived or are trying to conceive. I was diagnosed with PCOS probably 10+ years ago. My husband and I were just married in May, and because I know there are issues with PCOS and trying to conceive, he and I are already preparing ourselves for the (hopefully not so) long road to conception! I had some labs done last week, my doctor is thinking of putting me on Metformin. I'm assuming a few of you have tried Metformin, I'm wondering, what were your results? Did you have complications? Side effects? Obviously, I know medications will affect everyone differently, but all of the information I'm finding on the web is seeming overwhelming. A little girl talk may be just what I need!

Thank you!

Re: Preparing to TTC with PCOS

  • Hi it's great to hear that you're ready to conceive. I have been diagnosed with pcos from I was 12 and it has been a rough road struggling with weight gain and all the other side effects. I was on metformin for the past 6 years with horrible side effects but it was tried with other medications for me such as clomid menopur etc and all have failed for me. But everyone is different so that might work for you. I just did my first ivf cycle and it was successful but miscarried at 6 weeks. So just have faith and it will happen and you will have the support of a lot of females here. We are here for each other.

  • Howdy! Welcome and GL on your journey!!!

I have a similar background. Couple of things which you may already know... metformin side effects! I was on it briefly at around age 24, gave me extreme diarrhea. Supposedly this goes away, but one public instance and I was done. My sister is on it and tolerates it with very little side effects so go figure!

Second: try temping instead of using OPKs. They dont work for women with sustained high levels of LH which most PCOS patients have. You'll just get positives on multiple days.

Third: food! Look into nutrition. It makes the most impact for PCOS patients especially reducing simple carbs and sugars. Bye pasta! Bye soda!! Sad face. Good luck!!!
  • Hi there!! I have had PCOS since I was about 12 as well and have been on metformin for about a year and a half and it hasn't done crap for me and I get diarrhea for the first two weeks I start it and then it goes away. Other than that, I have not had any side effects. Also, I agree with @HBamama2B. I stopped using OPKs after just getting positives everyday and talking to my fertility nurse who told me exactly what she ^^^^ just said. Women with PCOS have high LH levels and therefore OPKs do not work well for us. Best of Luck!!!

  • Hello! I have PCOS as well. The good news is the success rate with treatments is very very high for PCOS so hopefully you (and all of us other PCOS ladies) can get pregnant soon! I have never been on metformin. My doctor has me on Femara and then injections (Gonal F) to induce ovulation before I do IUI. I have to say it's actually nice being on the meds because for once I feel "normal" (well that is aside from taking so many pills and taking shots) because I NEVER had a normal period before. Now I feel like my hormones are somewhat regulated. I'm here for you if you need any advice/support!

  • I was also diagnosed with PCOS when i was 18 and had menses 1 maybe 2 times a year. I've struggled a lot with weight and when i finanlly had enough of the mood swings and just feeling completely depressed all the time i went on BC. Then when Dw and i started prepping for TTC I went on metformin. Started 3 yrs ago for about a year and a half with very little side effects. Since stopping, AF has been a regular visitor (ranging between 28CDs and 38CDs). Currently going to start on medicated cycles of IUI with my RE.

Are they putting you on metformin to regulate so that you can TTC with DH naturally? My PCOS is partially because I have slight insulin resistant so it really helped regulate me.

  • I too have PCOS. I have been placed on metformin twice. the first time I had really bad headaches, but they had me take it in the morning.  This time my RE put me on an extended release, and told me to take it a night with dinner.  I have not had any problems this time around and I've lost 17lbs. since I started it on July 7th of this year.  My RE also told me to eat a reduced carbohydrate diet, but didn't give me  a magic # of cards to eat per day.  I went on amazon and purchased a few books on PCOS diet. they have helped me a great bit.  I try to keep my calorie intake around 1500 per day and fewer than 150grams of carbs. I have tried clomid will no ovulation. Most recently I was put on femara and my RE was not pleased with the results the two times we tried.  So I am now waiting to begin my next cycle where I will be taking Femara in addition to Gonal-f injections and then an Ovidrel trigger.  I hope that this helps you, but keep in mind ever persons treatment is personal and not everyone responds to meds the same. Good luck TTC!
