Boob maintenance :)

How are you guys keeping the ladies in working order? Any secrets that work well to share?

I try to use lanolin after feedings whenever possible but sometimes can't find time to because baby wants to keep snacking. I don't have time to sit with my boobs out and let the lanolin do it's magic, so i put it on and cover it with my bra which isn't ideal but it's the best i can think of. Any one else? Overall my boobs are uncomfortable most of the time but I'm EBF so I know it comes with the territory, breast feeding doesn't hurt necessarily but it certainly leaves you dodging the baby finger nails like your life depends on it. Sheeeeesh!

  • How old is your LO? I dont use anything. LO is 4wks and there is no more tenderness except if the shower hits them directly.

  • Same here, almost 5 weeks and I use nothing, but second the shower directly hitting them is a little tender feeling.
  • Same, 10 days and no tenderness. That stopped around the 5th day. Is your LO latching well?
  • Argh. Don't get me started! If I had normal boobs and more time I would do lanolin or breast milk and air dry, with a bit of time in the sun each day.

(As it is I'm on a laundry list of medication, herbal supplements and assorted boobie-healing creams :( )
  • I still use a lot of lanolin before I put on my bra pads. Not sure if i need to, but I'm scared not to!

  • I had a very badly cracked nipple on one side which is where my main source of discomfort came from, LC suggested that instead of feeding and pumping that side at all to try hand expression until it healed up some- worked like a charm!

    This.

LO is just about 6 weeks, I think the issue may be a shallow latch, I really try to position correct but it must be a bit off. she is gaining weight like Champ just a sore momma. Going to try to see a LC soon. Thanks mommas, good to hear that this shouldn't be happening and I need to check it out.
  • These comments make me jealous of you ladies that aren't having discomfort! (Not that I wish you were) just got back from the doctor and have the start of yeast so I have to start antibiotics and they won't make it stop hurting immediately....I'll have to suffer through until it's cleared :( I'm excited to know that it shouldn't always be uncomfortable though!
  • Hope a LC can help you all, until then hang in there and can you pump and let someone do a bottle to give you a bit of a break??

I have the same issue! How long did you pump for before it healed? The most I tried was a day because it was much more work! And that nipple kills me bc it isn't healed.

I had this issue on both sides and my doctors office wrote a prescription for "triple nipple cream" it's by a dr.brown I think and it was amazing!! Healed the one side up in like a day! The other side was a little slower but it worked the best for me
  • I recommend getting a nipple ointment from your doctor if you are in any pain.

I know that a previous poster mentioned "triple nipple cream"

I was giving APNO (All Purpose Nipple ointment). it has 4 ingredients and I think that without it I may have stopped EBF. I was in so much pain in the first 1-3 weeks. My nipples were cracked and bleeding. This ointment worked wonders. I hear that it can be pricey because the pharmacists have to actually compound (read: mix and make) the ointment from other medicines. Not all pharmacies make it, but I was able to easily find one that would. I also hear that it may be expensive for some. My insurance covered all but $15.
  • Having a proper latch makes a world of difference! I had the same problem. Took him awhile to latch correctly but things improved significantly when he did. Good luck I know how painful and annoying it can be!

  • So I'm going to ask on this post,

Any way to make nipples not hurt when not bfing? Mine are so sensitive. It doesn't hurt when lo is bfing only afterwards when I put my boobs away
Landolin helps some. But not a whole lot
  • I went to a lc because I had cracked and bleeding nipples. She showed us how to latch properly and told me to get some polysporin. It helped heal me up quickly. Might try that. Good luck.

I hand expressed for about four days(?) and put Neosporin on it because I honestly didn't even think to call the Dr for nipple cream
    :-/
  • I was horribly sore for the first two weeks. Then just a bit uncomfortable until LO was about a month old. Now we are at 6 weeks and I am just fine. Even the shower doesn't hurt them anymore! I used the Earth Mama nipple butter as well as the Motherlove nipple cream and loved them both! I never have the time to leave my boobs hanging out to dry either, but when I was still pretty sore I would keep those gel pads in the fridge and put those on after I put on the nipple butter. It helped a ton!
  • 4 days it is. I'll give it a try to not be in pain anymore!!
