  • Have you talked to your OB about your concerns? They are in the best position to help you. Have you been referred to a nutritionist or another doctor to help you with your diet?

  • My story is very similar to yours. 37, 3rd baby, first time with GD, diagnosed at 32 weeks.

I've managed it all with my diet and exercise. I've been very strict following the recommendations of my dietician, and monitoring my blood 6 times a day.

If you monitor your blood and keep a food journal, it doesn't take long to find out what works for your body, because everyone is a bit different.

I found that I couldn't eat fruit with a meal, but can happily have it as a snack between meals. I also found that rather than 3 portions of carb at a meal and one as a snack, it worked for me to have 2 portions of carbs at each meal and snack from lunchtime onwards. I can have 3 portions of carbs for breakfast and my blood sugar levels are fine.

There isn't always an obvious reason why your blood responds the way it does, but it's really just a matter of seeing what your numbers do and tweaking your diet accordingly. You might end up needing insulin and that's fine too, it just means that as the demands of the placenta and baby increase, your pancreas struggles to keep up.

Have you been put onto blood monitoring and referred to a dietician? Or have you just been given general guidelines to follow because you're at the "low end" of GD?

I was initially given general guidelines which I followed, and then blood tested a month later, and my numbers had worsened which is when the blood monitoring and serious dietary advice kicked in.

Definitely talk to your OB, and best wishes to you!
