I know, there are other threads on this but I can't find the right one to post on it. I am planning on doing pocket diapers...do I need these?
FINALLY, anyone use the target brand (gDiapers or Trend) with success? I'm thinking bum genius but these seem nice too.
All these cloth diaper things are just, ugh, so confusing. Wondering if I should just bite the bullet and buy 24 on amazon, the charcoal inserts (how many?) and call it a day!!
Re: Cloth Diaper Accessories
That being said, cloth diaper brands kind of depend on what works for you and baby. I know some people who hate gdiapers and others who love them. Most people seem to love Bumgenius 4.0 pockets the most. (They've been my personal preference out of the brands my friends use and what I've stocked up on for my own baby). FYI, those come with microfiber inserts. No need to buy any other inserts unless your child is sensitive to microfiber or is a heavy wetter. Heavy wetters tend to do better with charcoal or hemp inserts. Might not be a bad idea to have additional inserts on hand if you can afford it. Also, Bumgenius seem to be great once baby is out of newborn and in size one. You just have to find what works for you in newborn. I prefer actually true "newborn" cloth diapers in the beginning because they can fold down and not hit the cord stump. Even if your newborn can fit in the size one's weight-wise, usually the leg holes are too big and the diaper leaks. So I'd strongly recommend investing in some newborn size diapers if you haven't already. My personal preference is prefolds and covers for newborns since they poop/pee about a dozen times a day. You can just take out the prefolds and wash them, the covers don't have to be changed every time. Makes laundry easier. However there are newborn pockets as well.
I'd recommend this site: https://www.fluffloveuniversity.com they have a lot of info on prepping/cleaning diapers, and explain the different kind of diapers, troubleshooting, etc. they have a troubleshooting group on Facebook as well, helpful since your recommended wash routine will be based on your machine (HE, top loader, front loader) and the kind of water you have (hard, soft, well) . It can be a lot of info at first, but once you're familiar with the terminology it's actually quite useful.
Good luck!!!!
Disposi liners could come in handy after baby starts on solid foods (for convenience) but during the first few months if baby is only eating breastmilk, then the poops are water soluble and can go straight to the wash. Or, like the PP said, if there is some sort of medical reason where you need to protect the diaper from diaper rash cream or something.
I would bite the bullet and buy 24 or so online like you mentioned. I would say that's the minimum to make it go smoothly (and have some disposi diapers on hand just incase!)
I haven't used mine yet but Alva baby diapers are only about $7 each and come with the liner. We also have charlie banana and bumgenius AIO's. Good luck!
If you happen to be Canadian then well.ca has them on for 15% off right now.
If you're American then I would recommend checking out the calgaryclothdiaperdepot for applecheeks. She ships to the U.S. And with the exchange rate the way it is right now you'll get a fantastic price on them!
They retain their value and are super easy to sell once you're done with cloth or if they don't work out. There is an applecheeks for sale or trade group on Facebook you can also check out. It is VERY active and you can probably get an awesome deal on a larger lot of diaper to start you out!
Good luck! I remember the research stage being very intimidating but cloth diapering has been so worth it!
I'm not a fan of g diapers personally. Bum genius are great and I've liked their customer service, also they have good resell value.
My most important accessories are the wet bags. I prefer zipper and several sizes. You can wash them with the diapers, so you want a couple large ones for home and the little ones are great when you're out. Even when i wasn't cding i used them for swim suits, accidents week clothes, beach towels. They're so useful they're worth it.
My newborn diapers have been used by 4 babies. I always strip used diapers myself and now that i have a yard again I'll be sunning them too. Used cloth diapers are great. Just ask about product use and yeast issues.
I also just use hanging wetbags and not a pail. I hang them on the towel rack in the kids bathroom.
Any oil or cream is going to cause issues. You can use the liners but you'll probably still going to need to strip them more often.
@kim1228 I am a FTM so I don't speak from experience, but we are doing a pail with a washable liner and then wet bags for in diaper bags, travelling, etc. We have 2 small wet bags and 2 large wet bags, but only because they were given to us. I feel like more than that isn't really necessary -- you'd really need one for in the diaper bag and one that can be in the wash? Same with the pail liners - we have 2, so that there is always one available when one is in the wash.
