Cloth Diaper Accessories

I know, there are other threads on this but I can't find the right one to post on it. I am planning on doing pocket diapers...do I need these?

FINALLY, anyone use the target brand (gDiapers or Trend) with success? I'm thinking bum genius but these seem nice too.

All these cloth diaper things are just, ugh, so confusing. Wondering if I should just bite the bullet and buy 24 on amazon, the charcoal inserts (how many?) and call it a day!!

  • No, you don't need disposi liners in addition to cloth.

Disposi liners could come in handy after baby starts on solid foods (for convenience) but during the first few months if baby is only eating breastmilk, then the poops are water soluble and can go straight to the wash. Or, like the PP said, if there is some sort of medical reason where you need to protect the diaper from diaper rash cream or something.

I would bite the bullet and buy 24 or so online like you mentioned. I would say that's the minimum to make it go smoothly (and have some disposi diapers on hand just incase!)

I haven't used mine yet but Alva baby diapers are only about $7 each and come with the liner. We also have charlie banana and bumgenius AIO's. Good luck!

  • I second fluff love! They will teach you everything you need to know about cloth. Also if you want to go with pockets try Alva baby or ecocloth. They have really cute prints and run about 5 bucks a piece.
  • I've heard that its better to hold off on investing in lots of diapers right away, try 1 or 2 from a few different brands and see what works best for you and baby. Lots of good info here: https://www.babygearlab.com/Cloth-Diaper-Reviews
  • Don't really need liners but I would use them for the first week since newborn poo is like tar and stained a lot of mine.
  • Thank you ladies for all the GREAT advice! Especially @elizabella85- thank you for taking the time for such a detailed response to me.

I'm going to buy the Bum Genius and a few Alva's--thanks @shantyrae and @limie for that recommendation too ...I want to do it all at once b/c I get the 15% registry completion discount on amazon!! If he hates them, then I'll resell the unused ones on ebay or something, recoup SOME cost maybe.

@tulegrl14 good tip, but we are just going to do disposable when our boy is newborn and we are in "survival mode"
  • I loved our bumgenius. But my daughter is allergic to the suedecloth lining:/ the only thing we can use are covers with flour sack towels. Which works great btw. A good cost effective option :) I'm in the process now of sprucing up all the covers and fst's I used with my first 2 for this one :) good luck!
  • Great advice posted above! Just wanted to mention my favourite brand! applecheeks are fantastic diapers and the bamboo inserts are so absorbent.

If you happen to be Canadian then well.ca has them on for 15% off right now.

If you're American then I would recommend checking out the calgaryclothdiaperdepot for applecheeks. She ships to the U.S. And with the exchange rate the way it is right now you'll get a fantastic price on them!

They retain their value and are super easy to sell once you're done with cloth or if they don't work out. There is an applecheeks for sale or trade group on Facebook you can also check out. It is VERY active and you can probably get an awesome deal on a larger lot of diaper to start you out!

Good luck! I remember the research stage being very intimidating but cloth diapering has been so worth it!

  • We use pocket diapers (mostly Alvas) and the disposable liners really are nice once they start solids. Until then EBF poops are water soluble and don't need to be rinsed before washing. I personally HATE dunking or spraying or rinsing poop diapers so bamboo flushable liners are a plus for us. We love the Charlie Banana bamboo liners the best and have found them at Target, BuyBuyBaby and of course Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Charlie-Banana-Diaper-Liners-Natural/dp/B00FQJ6216
    Pregnancy Ticker
      Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I'd get the liners but like a pp said they're not necessary for typical use.

I'm not a fan of g diapers personally. Bum genius are great and I've liked their customer service, also they have good resell value.

My most important accessories are the wet bags. I prefer zipper and several sizes. You can wash them with the diapers, so you want a couple large ones for home and the little ones are great when you're out. Even when i wasn't cding i used them for swim suits, accidents week clothes, beach towels. They're so useful they're worth it.

@komorebi what kind of wet bags? Gotta add them to my amazon list (ever growing...hehe)

ETA- good call with resale value. I'm already posting on resale sites on FB that I'm ISO of some cloth diapers. DON'T WORRY EVERYONE I'll be sure they are clean and sanitized before putting my LO in them ;)
  • I like planet wise and thirsties for wet bags. Zipper topped. I have a couple drawstring styles and both have lost their strings over the years, super annoying.

My newborn diapers have been used by 4 babies. I always strip used diapers myself and now that i have a yard again I'll be sunning them too. Used cloth diapers are great. Just ask about product use and yeast issues.
  • Planetwise wet bags!
  • @komorebi thanks for the tip about wet bags. I've gotten two as gifts and was starting to think I only needed one, but what you're saying makes sense. Do you use one in the diaper pail at home? And then have a few for being out with baby? Would 3 or 4 total be about right?

You can never have too many wetbags!! I have 4 medium sized ones, 1 large and 2 mini travel ones (the little ones fit like 3 dirty diapers).

I also just use hanging wetbags and not a pail. I hang them on the towel rack in the kids bathroom.

  • Has anyone heard of using coconut oil for diaper rash with cloth diapers? Someone mentioned this to me the other day, but I don't know if it will cause repelling issues on the diapers. Anyone have experience with this?

I have a small one for quick trips. If it gets a diaper i throw that in the large one and wait for wash day. And then if I'm going to be out i take a bigger one with me. I like to have a backup for wash day since diapers never quit.

Any oil or cream is going to cause issues. You can use the liners but you'll probably still going to need to strip them more often.
  • @komorebi what would you recommend for diaper rash in cloth?
  • Hmm OK so does anyone use both a diaper pail AND wet bags? I like the idea of a pail, rather than having to zip and unzip etc. in a different room than the nursery (walking to bathroom etc.).

If so, how many wet bags (and sizes?) do you have in addition to the diaper pail?

Coconut oil is fine for cloth diapers. It won't cause any issues or repelling. The green tube of butt paste is also good for cloth diapered babies. Check out fluff love university for the complete list of ointments that are ok for cloth.
  • Thanks @Limie

@kim1228 I am a FTM so I don't speak from experience, but we are doing a pail with a washable liner and then wet bags for in diaper bags, travelling, etc. We have 2 small wet bags and 2 large wet bags, but only because they were given to us. I feel like more than that isn't really necessary -- you'd really need one for in the diaper bag and one that can be in the wash? Same with the pail liners - we have 2, so that there is always one available when one is in the wash.
