Job search frustration

So, the job I currently work is a seasonal store (I live in a shore town) and they are closing at the end of this month. I've been actively searching for a job, but I feel like no one is going to hire me because I'm pregnant! I know that's discrimination which is illegal, but that doesn't mean the employer won't find another reason.

For instance, today I noticed a help wanted sign in the window of a bakery near me. I went in to see what they needed, and it was just a counter person. Hooray, I can do that! So I filled out at application and talked to the owner. He seemed nice and somewhat interested, but I could tell he kept looking down at my belly. I mentioned that I'm expecting, but not until January. Well, magically after that he goes "alright well, I just hired two new people so I'm not sure yet if I need the help. I'll have to see how everything goes with the new people." Grrrr...maybe I'm just being over sensitive and taking things personally, but I wanted to say "TAKE AWAY THE HELP WANTED SIGN THEN!"

Rant over. Is anyone else having this problem?

Re: Job search frustration

  • That stinks. Maybe go to a temp agency and do some temp assignments for the next few months and then look for something a little more permanent after baby comes?

  • It's probably a bit thst you're pregnant and a lot where you live. A seasonal town means you probably aren't the only qualified person looking for a job as summer wraps up. Employers can likely afford to be more picky.
