Infant CPR/Choking! Take it!

Tonight I took the infant CPR and choking training class. Wow! I had no idea how different it is than adult CPR. I would highly recommend everyone to take it. I am going to ask DHs parents and my parents to take it also since the baby will be spending time with them.

I felt anxious going into it with the mindset " I don't think I can do" and left feeling so empowered knowing that I could save my baby's life.

  • This isn't mandatory where you live? We have to take the class otherwise CPS can label us as unfit and prevent us from bringing baby home. luckily we are in the military and they teach it during an infant care class where we are stationed.

I've never, ever heard of that being the case.
  • Our hospital makes you watch a video before you can leave. That being said I've been certified in CPR/first aid/lifeguarding since I was 15 so I'm pretty familiar with it, plus I just re certified this past May. But it is a great skill to have
  • I've never heard of it being mandatory either, but I would absolutely reccomend it too.

  • I never took it. Mainly due to me being on bedrest from weeks 18-36 (when I had my girls) so I never got to take it like my plan to. Then once my girls were born, everything was so chaotic and I didn't get around to it until they were 14 months old when I became a daycare provider.

2 weeks after training, my daughter choked, turned purple and I had to perform the Heimlich on my own baby. It resulted in an overnight stay at our university hospital and was one of the scariest things I've ever encountered. But I am so happy I had to tools to save my daughters life.

  • I love the idea of taking the class, when we lived on base and it wasn't mandatory for us either, at least not then.

  • It's not mandatory to take it here. But my husband is in the military as well and he has always gone over with me proper cpr for adults and children. I'm not certified. But it definitely came in hand just the other week when my four year daughter was choking on an item. Definitely scared me but I was happy I knew exactly what to do and how to.
  • I never heard of it being mandatory to take. But, I'm definitely going to take it.

  • I just recertified yesterday! I have to recertify every two years for work, nice refresher on how to handle a choking infant.
  • When your baby starts eating solid food, you will want to know the difference between gagging/choking and what to do about it. Too often people stick their fingers in and lodge the object further.
