Protein woes

Hi, all. I searched the board for a similar post, but didn't quite find what I was looking for. My apologies if this is redundant for anyone.

Anyhow, I'm having a really hard time eating meats. Last time I met with my doctor, she told me I needed to focus on proteins and veggies, but since I can't stomach proteins in meat form, that's been quite difficult. Does anyone have any ideas for alternative sources of protein? I know I can google (and I have), but I wanted some input from other pregnant ladies. I also tend to get tired of foods pretty quickly, so the more options the better. Thank you in advance!

Re: Protein woes

  • I can't stand meat either so I drink those protein fruit smoothies (odwalla or bolthouse farms), or eggs, and peanut butter with apples or pb and j. If you can stand a salad, you can have a southwest salad with beans, etc for protein. I actually love McDonalds salad but only with the crispy chicken, grilled chicken is gross to me for some reason.

  • I make a fruit smoothie with plain Greek yogurt in it. You can't taste the yogurt but it makes it a little creamy and there's a ton of protein
  • Eggs, peanut butter, protein smoothies like pp mentioned (tasty and come in many flavors so you don't get bored), beans, yogurt and cheese. Get creative with the protein items you do like and try new recipes. You may find new things you like.
  • Eggs are one of the best sources of protein. I just keep some boiled in the fridge.

  • I second all the previous suggestions and I'd add some quinoa and edamame to those mentioned.

  • You've got some great suggestions here. I had the same problem and had to supplement with protein powder. Talk to your medical provider and research pregnancy safe protein powders, but it's really helped me through my meat aversions!

I would add, don't give up on meat. I had to experiment with what worked. I finally found that rotisserie chicken was good for me because I didn't have to cook it and smell it, but also it's easy to hide in things (chicken salad sandwich, burrito, quesadilla, enchilada, etc.). A little meat goes a lot way for that 75 grams of protein!!
  • I struggle with the same. I can't eat meat, fish, eggs (most of the time), cheese, poultry, tofu, tempeh, etc. It's rough. I just discovered siggi icelandic yogurt though. It's 13 grams of protein per serving with almost no added sugar. I'm a huge fan. I also eat beans and chickpeas. Bean and cheese burritos from whole foods are a lifesaver. I also found Orgain almond milk with protein which has 10g/cup. I can also drink bone broth (it doesn't taste like much) and that has 9g/cup.

    It's a struggle.
  • I agree with everything previous posters said. My favorite protein snacks are string cheese (8g protein per stick) and Greek yogurt (11g per serving). I usually eat 3 string cheeses a day and a yogurt, so I get 35g just from snacks. Also the calcium is great!
