Black Widow Babies Rant

My Hubby and I came home a few days ago to teeny tiny baby black widows all over our dining room. He was such a trooper because he vacuumed them up and found a few places of egg sacs. After he got rid of those he steamed cleaned our carpet just to make sure none were hanging around there. Hubby is super sweet because he knew my emotional and physical limitations and never once asked me for help. Luckily only two of the sacs had hatched. There were about 7 sacs that did not hatched yet that he found.

It's been about three days and we are still randomly finding little baby black widows in our house. I am sure there are little stragglers hanging around, but Xander is due Nov 15th and now I am freaked the heck out about them.

We live in a complex that is quite expensive. We only stayed her last year because we did not want to move again. This actually happened last year as well. We have reptiles and told them that we didn't want anyone to spray inside. However what are we paying for if they don't spray outside? I am super concerned and super frusturated. I went to the front office and told them that this was the second time it has happened and she said "Okay I will call you to tell you what day they are spraying outside". That was Saturday. They still have not called us. I am so frusturated. Hubby and I are actually talking about bug bombing our house because we have such bad spider issues already and now it is intensified due to this new issue.

Sorry for my vent. It's not like a black widow or two is not controllable, but 100's of babies is just wrong!!! Hopefully I can get over this fear soon and know that Xander, and Xander's parents, are safe. I HATE BLACK WIDOWS!!!

Re: Black Widow Babies Rant

  • This is terrifying! My husband is scared of spiders and I have no idea what I would do! Probably not even sleep in the house!!!!!! You are a trooper! Is there anyway you could take the reptiles out and have the inside sprayed? I have the heeby jeebies just thinking about it!!

  • NOPE NOPE NOPE.

Since this is the second time this has happened I would call/write the company that owns your apartment complex since they're blowing you off. Basically, go to corporate.

  • I'm so glad we don't have black widows, but you definitely need to spray inside and out.
  • Agreed if u do not spray inside you will prob keep having issues. We have some regular spiders and didn't spray inside this year bc of the pregnancy and chemical and we def have more spiders than before inside.
  • Definitely need to have inside sprayed too. There if the spray they use inside is safe for humans, surely your animals are safe too.
  • ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! omg! I hate spiders.....baaa
  • That is awful!!! I know your reptiles are important to you, but honestly I think spraying inside is the best thing to do. You wouldn't want your baby to get bitten by a poisonous spider! Can someone pet-sit for you so they are not in your home while they are spraying? Good luck.. that is truly terrifying..

  • You definitely need to have the inside sprayed. Even if they spray the outside a hundred times it's not going to do anything for a problem obviously on the inside. There are safe pesticides while you're pregnant you just can't be home while it's being applied.

My husband too. He's PETRIFIED of spiders - to the point where he won't take walks with me after dark because he's afraid spiders will descend from the buildings on our street and get in his hair. To the point where, I'm not even exaggerating, he almost set our house on fire trying to kill one.

Normally I'm the spider guy in the house. I don't mind them. But black widows are a different story. I'd move everybody out and call the exterminator. Seriously.

You are renting and pregnant and it's the landlord's responsibility to deal with an outbreak of dangerous pests. Black widows definitely fall into that category.

Very true, but is it still the landlord's responsibility if the tenant refuses treatment?

The landlord can't help if OP won't let them though. I don't think just spraying the outside is going to make much difference. OP is there anywhere you can temporarily move your reptiles so management can take care of the problem properly?

In any case I feel for you. I wouldn't be able to sleep in a black widow infested apartment. Good luck!!

  • Spraying just the outside could even make it worse, sends whatever is left finding refuge in your house. That is completely unacceptable though and you need to take care of that, like last week. It's a very serious safety issue.
