Failed hearing test, pediatric audiologist..

So while we were in the hospital my sons hearing was tested 3 different times. He passed in his right ear but failed in his left all 3 times. We have an appointment with a pediatric audiologist in a couple of weeks (he will be nearing 1 month old at the time) for further testing. I'm just curious if anyone else has had experience with their babies failing the hearing test and what the outcome might have been? I was told he could have failed it just because of fluid build up. I'm not overly worried, we will be ok even if something is wrong, but just hoping to hear about someone else's experience.

Re: Failed hearing test, pediatric audiologist..

  • My baby passed his right ear and failed his left ear as well. They tried him the next day and he passed. I had a c section and the nurse said it was probably just fluid still in the ears from having my c section.

  • DD2 failed one ear 3 times as well. I was so nervous, I have a structural defect that causes me to be partially deaf in my right ear. I felt so guilty!
I had to take her to an audiologist when she was one month old. I'm a crazy person, so I would stand on the other side of the room and make loud noises or yelp to see if she would react. Needless to say my "testing" was inconclusive!! Lol
She passed with flying colors at one month! I actually timed her feeding just right so that she was eating during the testing and fell asleep! I also was able to hold her the entire time!!
  • I had 3 of mine have to go back at 2 weeks old to do the hearing test again because they failed in one ear. They passed then.
  • My son failed his test three times and we have a follow up appointment next week. They told us it's probably just fluid in his ears so hopefully he passes this time.

  • DD failed her hearing in one ear and when we went back to retest she passed with no problems.

  • My hospital has actually stopped doing the hearing tests in the first few days because of so many referrals. They have found that most referrals result in no problems so they just do the hearing tests a couple of weeks out. With my first, they hadn't changed their policy yet and we were referred with perfect hearing at the follow up. It had me a nervous wreck for a week or so though.
  • I had a csection as well so I'm hopeful it was just fluid. Thanks for all the feedback, guys. I really appreciate it.

  • @shelbydd just wanted to let you know that my little guy failed his test in the hospital three times and passed the in depth test with the audiologist yesterday! Hope your guy passes his next test!

  • My cousin's son failed hearing tests and didn't respond to people clapping right behind his head until he was almost 3.  He isn't hearing impaired and just didn't respond to the testing for some reason.  He's now a perfectly healthy and happy, fully hearing sports-obsessed 13 year old!

That being said, there are AMAZING programs for children who are hearing impaired and if your babe is hearing impaired, he can still be happy, healthy and have a wonderful and fulfilling life.

    Hang in there!
  • We failed too. However, they tested only twice and the left ear did not pass the first test, but then in the retest left passed and right failed. Both the on call pedi and ours suggest that due to my c-section and the fact that both ears passed independent of eachother we shouldn't be too concerned. Easier said than done! Positive thoughts to all the mamas and babes facing further evaluation!
