Short term disability

I just thought I would share this information in case anyone was not aware. If you have insurance through work or personal then you probably have short term disability. If you were not aware of this you can make a claim for maternity leave! I had to do my own research with my first baby and contact my HR about it (my last job they informed me about it cause they were nice like that.)

I also went on reduced hours because of complications with my second and was able to collect sooner with that son.

Just thought I would share!!! It was a nice little unexpected check to help us out :) so contact your insurance and find out!!

Re: Short term disability

  • Not exactly true. Not every company offers it. My previous one, while I had insurance though them, didn't offer short term disability.

  • I'm very lucky that my employer offers short-term disability, however many do not. It's not something that comes packaged with insurance or anything. It's usually an entirely different provider. It's definitely good to check with the HR/benefits department just in case, though!

  • Thanks for sharing, but that unfortunately doesn't apply to many people.  For example, I'm not covered under the Family Medical Leave Act as my office is too small, so no maternity leave. I qualify for short-term disability, but after a 7-day elimination period, I will only get 5 weeks paid at 60%. Also, I handle all Human Resources and Payroll duties, so I will probably be harassed while I'm gone. Oh... and if I decide not to come back, then I have to pay back all of my short-term disability benefits, so I'm screwed either way. Cheers to the american health care system!  :((
  • That's why I thought I would share so people could look into it :)

I wish I would have known about breast pumps through insurance when I had insurance but never knew it was a thing :(
  • My company offers it but you have to qualify for fmla to get it. I don't because I was less than 25 hours in the last 50 weeks due to some issues with the pregnancy. I wasnt informed enough, I should have done more research myself.
  • My cousin lives in PA and she couldn't get a breast pump through insurance. She had her baby in August. Not all states are caught up.
  • Every plan is different, but do check with your HR/benefits to see if it's offered. Not everyone realizes what their employer does/doesn't provide until they need it. Not all STD plans are alike, either. Some require you to qualify for FMLA, some do not (mine requires 90 days employment). Some will pay out for partial disability, some do not (mine does not), etc...

It's completely separate from your medical/dental/vision insurance.
  • My company does offer STD but you can only use it for the first 6 or 8 weeks of maturity leave (6 for vaginal or 8 for CS), and I think it is only 60%. Definitely worth asking HR or your absence management company about, everyone wants extra money.

  • While my company does not offer STD benefits, they are required to be provided by my state (NY). I had to do a decent amount of research to figure this out, so keep in mind, even if your company tells you that they don't provide, you may still be eligible! $160/week, here I come!

This is mine too. And you have to be there for a year to get it.
The rest of the time I will use FMLA and be unpaid.
