Not eating enough?

Anyone struggle to get their LOs to eat enough? DS eats 1.5-3 ounces every 2-3 hours. At his 2 month appt today his Dr said he really should be eating more. He's gaining weight (7 lbs at birth, 13 today) and has plenty of wet diapers. He either falls asleep or just spits out the nipple. I'm not sure what to do to get him to eat more.

Do you have oversupply when nursing!? I think he's gaining weight just fine!. My son is 10 weeks and at his 2 month appt he weighed 12 lbs 7 oz. I hope everything works out and good luck mama! :)

  • Hmm... What was the doctor's reasoning or explanation as to why he should be eating more?

It sounds like your LO is on track... Gaining wet and enough wet diapers...

Breastmilk or formula fed? Maybe LO has a smaller stomach and just needs to eat more often in smaller amounts?

  • My LO is 10 weeks old and today we went to doctor and she was weight, she is 12 lbs 13 oz and the doctor said she gaining weight perfectly, he even said to try to go for every 3 hours feedings since her weight gain is so good to give my self a break. Her birth weight was 7lbs 4oz. I even thought she was not eating enough since she only nurses for few mins at a time, I am not sure how many oz she drinks at a time because I usually do not feed her with bottle but when I have done it she usually drinks about 2-3 oz
  • Sorry I forgot to say he's ff. He actually didn't give any reasoning as to why he should be eating more. He just said he wants to see him eating 24-32oz at this age. But he did say his growth is fantastic and he's thrilled with how he's doing, but was just concerned with that one thing. Maybe I'm worrying for nothing.

  • Honestly, if he is gaining enough weight, I wouldn't worry too much. I think he is just going by the averages.
  • If he's gaining weight it shouldn't be a problem. Our daughter is 3 months and she eats 2 1/2- 3 oz consistently every 3-4 hours. But I guess it just depends. Our daughter was 3 lbs 9 oz at birth and now she is 8 lbs. We fortify her 20 calorie milk to 24 calories and she is growing on her own curve.
  • My LO is 9 weeks and weighs 10 lbs 9 oz and eats about the same. She is also FF. LOs pedi said she was doing great. It seems like your LO is on track. You're doing a great job momma!
  • 7 at birth to 13 at 2 months is more than enough weight gain so your little one is doing great! He's eating exactly what he wants and needs to, and with that weight gain he's healthy!

My LO was 7&13 at birth and at 11 weeks he is 12&13. My Dr. said he's doing great (I was concerned he wasn't gaining enough!) and I'm learning to accept that all babies grow and eat differently - healthy and happy are all that matters :)
