Dreft is the worst. It is so expensive and the scent is way too strong. We use All free and clear because it was what we used pre- baby. I think using regular detergent is fine. I think this is something FTMs get overly concerned about.
I washed all of my newborn clothes with regular ol' detergent, not even thinking about it. I think it's Costco's environmentally friendly kind. I'm not rewashing, folding & putting it all away again. I'm sure it's fine. If not, I'll purchase something more "baby friendly". I'm a FTM & these things slip my mind

I think baby detergent is mostly a marketing ploy... I have sensitive skin and use arm & hammer with no dye or perfume. Our daughter will get the same unless her skin reacts.
I was at Target tonight comparing laundry detergent prices and Dreft was nearly twice as much as All Free Clear and several dollars more than Tide Free & Gentle. I've always used Tide Coldwater Clean and Tide Ultra Stain Release (for DH's work clothes; he is an airplane mechanic/diesel mechanic at his family's business so I can't use cheap detergent!) but am going to switch to Tide Ultra Stain Release Free & Gentle (white bottle) once I run out of my current supply. I didn't realize they made the Ultra Stain Release in Free & Gentle and Tide always has coupons in the Sunday circulars so I was happy when I found this tonight! The smell of Dreft also kind of makes me nauseous and I think it's a marketing ploy too. I'm not sure how well other brands like Seventh Generation, Babyganics, etc compare to the cleaning ability of Tide but I'd be willing to give those a try as well if I found a good deal.
We registered for Dreft & I personally looove the smell (although I can tell that this is an unpopular opinion!). We won't go out & buy it if we don't get it at the shower because of the price, but I am a fan.
Thanks for all the info! We found some coupons for ALL so All Free and Clear it is haha. Probably something we should have done a while anyway with mild eczema.
I have sensitive skin but no brand preference so it makes it easier to save money by going with whatever free and clear I can get the best price on. Unless baby is super sensitive and requires something particular then that's what we'll be doing.
I got two bottles of dreft from my baby shower. I love the smell. It smells of baby. But after these bottles I will probably just use what I normally use which is some type of tide.
I think anything without dyes and perfumes is the only thing I'd look for.. I use that normally on my clothes so I'm not looking to change it. If he has sensitive skin and something comes from it then I will try something else but no need to switch to anything until then!
Re: Dreft or All Free and Clear, or other?
