Plus size and c-section

I'm plus size and will be having a c-section in two weeks. Any suggestions on what will make recovery easier??

Re: Plus size and c-section

  • I found the belly band binder very useful. Also, my incision would get yeasty smelling because it is under where my belly hangs. I had a nurse suggest mixing peroxide with water (a small amount of peroxide as you don't want to dry out the incision). I would wipe (the peroxide/water) under where my belly hung over the incision, let it air dry, and then stick a gauze pad in there. I did that probably 2-3 times a day and it really helped.

  • When I had my c-section with my daughter my doctor told me to make sure to keep the incision clean and dry. Just be gentle and lightly clean with gentle soap and water in the shower. Don't use an antibacterial soap. Also they said make sure to dry the incision with a hair dryer after to make sure it fully dry, and then stick a pantiliner in there to absorb any excess moisture. I listened to the directions for awhile, but having a newborn I was always rushing and sometimes I didn't fully dry myself enough and I ended up getting a yeast infection around my incision that took forever to go away. So just keep the area as dry as possible. Lesson learned. I'm hoping for a VBAC this time. But, now I know if I have to have a c-section again. Also, the pain for me wasn't that bad the first week. I didn't even take any pain meds. It was when I got home and was moving around more that my incision hurt. So try to take it easy. Good luck!
  • After I had my son, I was the heaviest I've ever been not pregnant, and for the first time, I had the apron belly instead of just chub. Well, my incision healed fine, but a couple months later, I developed a rash under my belly. Desitin diaper rash cream helped tremendously! I highly recommend keeping it on hand for both you and baby!

  • Thanks everyone! My brother is getting married 5 days after my scheduled c-section. Really hope i can at least make the ceremony...
  • If you don't mind me asking were you told you had to have a c-section or is this because you want one? I know many plus sized woman, my mom included. Most of them have had successful vaginal births. Others had c-sections due to health problems.

It's ultimately your choice, I just would hate to know if you weren't even given an option unless it would affect your health. Good luck mama, wishing all c-section moms a speedy recovery :)

You'll be in the hospital 3-4 days and will need to take it easy for a couple weeks after that. As long as the ceremony is local, you probably will be able to attend, but you may not feel up to staying for the whole reception. Just make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get around and always have a place to sit.

  • LO is breech
  • Thanks!! I guess im more wondering if i should take a newborn out at 5 days old
  • I took my first lo out to classes with me (finishing up my college degree) when she was that young. Looking back, I probably shouldn't have. They are so little and there are so many germs. Its not good for a baby that little to get sick. Maybe keep baby isolated and bring hand sanitizer?

Keep the baby close, maybe in his car seat with a blanket over, and don't let people hold him/breath/touch/pass him around like a sack of potatoes, and I think it'll be fine.
