Emergency?!

how do you know when it is an emergency?

I have a doctors appointment at 3:30 tomorrow afternoon. I don't know when to stick it out or when to call the overnight nurse or when to go to the hospital!

I am currently 35w4d.

At 33w2d I went to the hospital thinking my water broke. It didn't, but I did have higher BP, and excess amounts of protein in my urine along with keytones and sugars. They sent me home after an hour. Baby has been looking great the entire time!
They said I was fine and sent me on my way.

I'm laying in bed now with the most intense heartburn I've ever had, along with pain in my right side, and severe upper middle back pain.

I know being pregnant just comes with a lot of aches and pains, but how do I know when it's more serious??

Also, I'm not sure this matters, but I'm very anemic apparently.

Thanks for your advice! I want to stick it out (and not wake up my sweet husband for a wasted hospital trip) until my appointment tomorrow afternoon, but just don't know what's serious and what's not!

Re: Emergency?!

  • My doctor told me when in doubt always get it checked out. Most of the time it's nothing but better safe than sorry.

Try calling the hospital first and see what they say.

I second that. It's always better to check in with your doctor or local hospital when something feels off. And then if it turns out to not be a big deal, at least your mind will be at ease. About a month ago I didn't feel the baby move as much so I called my doctor and they got me in right away. I was so upset I was crying in the lobby. Turns out the baby and I were completely fine... he or she (we're not finding out) just happened to change his or her sleeping habits! But my doctor assured me I did the right thing by coming in... if something feels off, better to have it checked out! Hope you feel better!

I'd third the recommendation to call in! This is not something you *should* feel like you need to "know." That's what doctors are for! :)
  • Any update on your pain?

Calling is the best option. I called my doc after hours when I sideswiped a concrete wall (not smart, I know) with my car and after a long conversation about the event, my doc didn't have me go in. But it put my mind at ease to know I called and it was fine.

  • I would call. I think the intense heartburn with your other symptoms is a sign of pre-e. I seem to recall a story from one of the first girls on this board that delivered (weeks ago!) that was one of her symptoms! When she finally went to the doc, her BP was dangerously high. Call your doc, or even better, just go in. Being safe is better than being sorry! Keep us updated.
  • When in doubt, always call your doctor. That's what they are there for.
  • I definitely agree with calling your doctor, but since you mentioned ketones and sugar....do you have GD?

I ask because I do, and for some odd reason, I've had my sugar get very low twice now and I've had the worst pain in my middle back, ribs and sides. I thought heartburn maybe (I've never had it so don't know what it feels like) but when I checked my sugar it was low and once I drank some juice or something to get it back up to normal levels I felt much better. I wouldn't have guessed those symptoms had anything to do with my sugar levels but after having to have paramedics come to my house in the middle of the night because it was so bad I thought I would pass out, they checked my blood sugar and told me it was symptoms of a sugar "crash".
  • When it feels like you should call you Dr. definitely call her!  Unless youre in labor, you should feel any kind of agonizing pain. If you do, contact them asap.
  • Hope everything's ok!
