Changing area downstairs?

Just wondering what everyone is using for a changing area in a two story house? I originally thought we could change baby on the floor, but hubby insists that he well want a specific place to change the baby where he can stand up. He suggested the kitchen table! Yuck!

I've been looking at pack and plays to use downstairs, but am thinking the baby will outgrow the changer pretty quickly. Is it possible to change the baby easily in the highest setting in a pack n play?

Any other ideas for a changing setup downstairs??

Re: Changing area downstairs?

  • We have a 2 story and I'm just planning on keeping a little diaper caddy by the couch and changing him on the floor or on the couch with a towel. I do know many of the new pack-n-plays have a changing attachment. Mine does not :(

We used a pack n play with the changer, but the one we have has a decent weight limit and our LO is a peanut. I've also changed her on the bassinet (highest setting) of the pack n play, and that worked well too. After about six months it was easier to change her on the floor. Next baby I doubt we'll even use the pack n play.
  • I have the contoured pad and a basket with all the essentials on top of the buffet/server in our dining room. I would NOT rely on a PNP unless you're really short. I'm 5'9, MH is 6'4 and when we used the changer attachment while on vacay it was a TORTURE having to stoop down all the time.

  • I used the dresser with a changing pad in the master bedroom for the first few months. I put a wipe warmer and diaper caddy on top, as well.

Now, I put a blanket on the floor in the master or just use the bed if it's a #1.
  • I used the pack n play for about 3 months because I had a csection and wanted to minimize going up and down stairs. After 3 months I put it away and went upstairs to change every diaper. It was a good way to sneak in a little exercise/extra steps.

  • We used our pack and play---didn't have the fancy attachment--for the first few months. Just put a towel or mat underneath the baby in the pack and play. Otherwise, we just changed the diaper upstairs in the baby's room or on the floor in the living room. When they have a messy diaper, I found it easier to change them in their room since wipes were easily within reach and our diaper genie was there. Didn't want a diaper genie in my living room or to be throwing all the smelly diapers into my kitchen garbage.

  • We have a huge laundry room in one of our homes so we ended up putting an extra  changing table and an extra diaper genie in there. In our other home I keep a caddy of supplies and one of those changing pads that are meant to go on a dresser in one of the drawers of one of our built ins in the family room. I slide everything out and change on the floor.

Personally, I think the changing table attachment with our pack and play looks precarious and insecure. We quickly removed it and have never used it. Of course, others mileage may vary.  Our LO is a very alert and energetic baby and a bit of a squirmer.
  • We have a large bathroom on the main floor of our house so I have put a changing table in there with a cady of diapering supplies. With 4 kids the less I can add to the clutter around the living areas of our house the better.
  • I know this is old, but just wanted to say that I thought it was great changing the baby in the pnp (just on the upper basinet level, not in the actual changer thing).  I'd just put a changing pad down under her.  I thought the height was fine and I could leave her there to go wash my hands, get new clothes, etc., and didn't have to worry about her rolling off!  Once she got interested in trying to sit up, we starting changing her on the floor instead, but it got us through a number of months.

Downstairs, we just have diapers, wipes, and a changing pad we put on the carpet in the living room -- nothing too special!
