OB/GYN Issue/Switch

I dont know if I am just hormonal or if I should switch. My current team of OBs are at a very well known hospital (UPMC) which is 30 mins away from my house but they are not personable at all! There are 3 doctors in the practice and you have to rotate between seeing all 3 so no one really gets to know you. They do this because they dont know who will be on call when you deliver. The issue I am having is I go to my appt the nurse ask "any cramping bleeding? Still taking your prenatals?" Types in computer leaves. Doctor comes in check heart beats, types in computer, "come back in 4 weeks" doesnt ask if I have questions concerns etc!
There is a hospital in town which is a really crappy small 2 floor hospital and the doctors are really nice, and sympathetic. I'm thinking about switching to them but just scared that their hospital does not have the proper means for if anything went wrong (I am attempting a VBAC). So should I go with the staff that is not personable but has hospital with great up to date equipment and known for being the best, or should I go with the nice doctors with the crappy hospital?

  • Can you look into hiring a doula so that you feel a bit more supported?

I would set up a consultation with the other hospital and find out more information. I also agree about looking into a doula. I LOVED mine and will be using her again this time around. I understand where you're coming from. I switched from an OB to a midwife last time because I didn't like the staff and rotating between 6 doctors. I'm wishing you the best!

  • I would just tell him (the dr) that I have some questions.  You're paying, demand the time.  Don't be mean about it, but you know what i mean :)  see how that goes, but you could definitely look into something else.  My doctor appointment are fairly quick and too the point too.  He does ask me if i have any questions, but typically i probably see him for 5-10 min. max.  I agree with some of the other people that if you want something more personal you might want to check out a midwife.

  • I understand where you are coming from - I met with my doctor for the first time yesterday (she was on vacation) and she was very quick and to the point, not particularly personable.  However, as others have said on different threads, you do have to be your own advocate when it comes to your pregnancy.  If you have questions or concerns, do not wait for them to ask.  For me, the benefits of your current practice outweigh the cons.  They have a better medical facility, and since you are rotating between doctors, they may notice different things that a single doctor may not, so there is an advantage to having different perspectives.  That being said, this is your body, your pregnancy, and ultimately your decision.  Do a littler more research and see if the other hospital will meet your needs, and perhaps look into a doula as well. Good luck!

  • I had a similar situation before. My Former OB with DS was pay but he delivered at the top hospital in the region. It was a nice hospital very well equipped but, the nurses were buttholes! They were soo rude and rushing you through labor so you could clear your room for the next patient. They had the highest c/s rate, I ended up a c/s, because they refused to wait for me to progress after only 12 hours of labor. I delivered DD there, that's how I know all that. Then the other OB delivered at a old crappy hospital, equipped but not as well as the other. That OB was so nice, he agreed to let me VBAC. The staff was SO nice and caring! It was such a drastic change! I loved it! Now I know not to choose by the "looks" of a hospital.
Also, I second getting a doula if you stick with your current OB, she will help you voice your opinion and explain things some OBs or nurses won't. Good luck! Hope everything turns out well!
