Hip Bursitis

Does anyone have experience with hip bursitis? It sounds like ice and rest are about the only things I can do for it right now, but neither seem to be doing a whole lot. I basically can't sleep at all now because the pain is so bad when I lie on either side and I can't get into a comfortable position propped up on my back. Any miracle cures out there??

Re: Hip Bursitis

  • I have this in general so I would add stretching and message...if u can get someone to message u kinda on your side/butt cheek area it helps a lot!

  • I have this too. Placing a pillow under my hip and belly when I sleep has helped a lot. It seems to provide some extra support against the added weight.
  • Checking out this thread because hip pain has been one of the worst symptoms I have experienced. One of the newest joys is my left hip has been locking up & sending shooting pains all the way to my toes anytime I stand up after laying down for a period of time. The only thing that helps is walking it off, but it's hurts worse before it gets better.

*lurking* I have a torn acetabular labrum in my hip which has many of the same symptoms and at home treatments as bursitis. I second the pillow support mentioned by PP. I've also found wearing flats and not heels helps a ton. Running, hiking, bike riding, and walking up hills all cause me flare ups (basically anything with a repetitive motion lifting knee to or above 90 degrees), so try to limit those activities. When you aren't pregnant, check out Penetrex cream. You can get it on amazon and I found great relief using that consistently. It has arnica in it, which isn't safe for pregnant or nursing mothers. I'm so sorry you are in pain and hope you find relief soon.

  • Ditto @carrieoct15 Going to chiropractor today. Will report back later.
  • Thanks ladies...@hacharles, would love to know if your chiro has any new suggestions. I may try to see one next week if I can't get any relief. I have a snoogle and sleep with that between my knees + a wedge, which I put under my belly the last two nights and makes me at least slightly more comfortable...now I will try to add a pillow under my hip. I can't imagine what I look like when I sleep...forget about what I look like when I first wake up and can't walk for a couple of minutes.

Well I would love to tell you that seeing a chiropractor was the most relieving experience but that's just not the case. Though I will say that I have heard of other chiropractors that incorporate a small massage with an adjustment so I'm not ruling out trying someone else in the near future.

The chiropractor I saw today did a 5 second adjustment (aka popped my back) and more or less told me that his care may or may not help me. Keep in mind this was my first visit ever to a chiropractor so maybe I set my hopes a little high and maybe there are better stories of success.

eta: he offered no extra suggestions for pain relief... that was a bummer.

  • Great...thanks dude!!  (Your chiropractor, not you.)

Does your chiropractor specialize in prenatal? Mine was recommended to me by a mom friend, and she specializes in prenatal and post-natal care (Webster technique). She did some small adjustments on my hips, which are out of alignment due to an old back injury from a few years ago, and also does stretching on my pelvic ligaments and my legs/hips. She also recommended trying out prenatal yoga for the stretching. I'm not a big yoga fan, but the prenatal videos I found in YouTube were very relaxing and some good non-strenuous stretches.

I would definitely try to find a chiropractor with lots of prenatal experience, someone knowledgeable with pelvic issues will definitely give you more than just an adjustment of your back. They also can help with baby positioning if your LO is refusing to go head down.
  • My chiropractor uses acupressure and I truly believe that is what has kept me as active as I have been this pregnancy. I have a double fusion and go once a week ... Every few weeks I also get a massage which helps a lot too. I hope you find some relief somewhere...hard to do much when your hips hurt
  • My bursitis And sciatica flares up every now and again since college. For pain management, stretching, hot/cold press and massages in the hip and butt really help. For management, a chiropractor I saw said to roll out my IT band (outer sides of thighs from knee to hip) on a foam roller daily. It seriously has been the best advice I've ever gotten to keep it from flaring up again. The foam roller acts as like a deep tissue massage and helps your hips realign. With all the changes in our lower body, the muscles in our thighs can get pretty knotted up and the affected side will try and compensate as we walk and that puts a strain on our hips and all lubricative "equipment".

    Hope this helps!

Unfortunately, there are no miracle cures for bursitis. It is typically an overuse injury, therefore, the best thing you can do at this point is to avoid any exercises or movements that may continue to irritate the bursa. The pillow between the legs at night did offer some relief. Hopefully your hip starts to feel better soon. If not, maybe get in touch with an orthopedic doctor that specializes in the hips... If you haven't already :)
