when did dr start cervical check?

i am 33wks and 2days and im just curious about when cervical checks start at the dr office. Thats not something I want to be surprised with and no one at my office has mentioned it.

Re: when did dr start cervical check?

  • Mine will start them next week at 37 weeks. I'm a little surprised she doesn't do one this week when she's in the area for the gbs test but I'm not complaining! From a lot of other recent posts it seems like some doctors aren't even routinely doing them anymore since you can be dilated for ages and it's not necessarily a sign of anything immediate.

I would just ask at your next appointment. I think I was around 32 weeks when I asked because I didn't want the hey guess what moment either.

  • I asked and was told last couple weeks or last week so I assume 38+for me.
  • My doctor doesn't do them at all!

  • Sounds like there's a lot of variation, and your best bet is to just ask at your next appointment!
  • Mine started last week at 35 weeks.

  • My dr starts at 36 weeks, when doing the GBS test. He gave me the heads up a few weeks ago, so that I would be prepared and not surprised by the request to drop my pants. I'd suggest you ask at your next appointment, or call and ask if you're really curious! All dr's are a little different in their approach.
  • I just had mine checked yesterday, I'll be 35 weeks tomorrow. Although, I think she just did it because she was already down there doing the GBS test. I didn't think to ask if she would start doing it weekly now but it seems like every practice is different.

  • My office has OBs and Midwives.  The OBs start cervical checks at 36w, but the midwives don't do them at all (unless the patient asks for one.)

It varies quite a bit. I had my first this morning at 36 weeks. I was told at my last appt (34 weeks) that these exams would begin. I would ask your doctor if you want to know for sure (who doesn't?). :) They may start them at 36-37 or they may not do them at all.

Also, I just want to say that before I had one I read all these awful posts about how painful and terrible the checks are. I know pain varies from one individual to another, so I'm not at all discounting the feelings or opinions of others, but mine wasn't painful. It was just a LOT of pressure (my cervix is still high so felt like she had to really push her way up there to find it), but it wasn't terrible. I never felt like I was going to leap off the table or cry or anything like that. It was just a lot of pressure and was somewhat uncomfortable, but only lasted about 15 seconds at most. I did have a decent amount of bleeding afterward and am still spotting, but that's to be expected, especially given the location of my cervix (she gave me a pad and warned me I would bleed when she finished). Hope this helps to calm anyone who may be dreading getting checked. :)
  • My doc said 38 weeks unless they have a reason to check it earlier.
  • Just had my 36 week appointment today. When my doc was doing the GBS test, he asked if I wanted to have my cervix checked too and I said of course! Lol I wasn't dialated at all and he had to push pretty far back
  • Different doctors will do it differently. Just ask them if they haven't told you. They will usually give you a heads up about appointments when you have to undress. I know this week is the strep test for me and then after that the checks start. But usually it's around when you start having the weekly appointments so they can keep tabs on you.
  • I was told they won't do it unless you ask, or if you are 39-40+ weeks with no signs of labor. She said that dilation really isn't as accurate as other symptoms. I have my GB Strep swab tomorrow at 36 weeks though, wondering if they will offer, since the doc is down there anyway, lol.
  • Mine starts at 36 weeks.
