Waking up in the middle of the night

I'm a little over 20 weeks and for the past week I've been waking up almost every day around 3:45 AM for no reason. My hips are killing me and I have trouble falling back to sleep. I've been trying a lukewarm heat pack on my legs and lower back to try and help. Any other ideas are welcome!

Re: Waking up in the middle of the night

  • I'm having the exact same issue. Tried a hot water bottle and different pillow configurations, all to no avail. I flip from side to side all night until I just get out of bed at 4 or 5 am. I do pregnancy yoga and next week I am going to start swimming a few days per week. Hopefully these two things will give some relief.

  • Yeah I gave up this morning and got up. I missed yoga last week but counting down the hours until my Wednesday class. Going to do a lot of stretching today.
  • Sleeping with a pillow between my legs seemed to help me a little bit.  Before I go to bed I go for a walk and do some stretches then put a heating pad on my back.

  • Definitely try pillow between your knees.
  • Ive been using a body pillow for a while, sleeping with it between my legs. :-(
  • This has happened to me for the past 2 weeks!! Everynight 3am and not able to go back to sleep :( but last night i went swimming before bed and i actually never woke up! Had to run to the bathroom as soon as i did wake up but def worth it to sleep through the night :)
  • I have been waking up around 3 as well, but often without any pain or obvious reason. I just "play a game" where I'm not allowed to open my eyes no matter what. I will eventually fall asleep, although it seems to be almost an hour some days. Baby training?
  • I have a snack and drink between 12-2 each night. Seems to be the only thing that works for me.

  • Heat agitated my pain I have to use cold packs
  • I'm like a little kid, I have a routine when I wake up in the middle of the night and it usually helps me go back to sleep. I always use the bathroom, wash my hands, drink some water, and go back to sleep. I'm also fully into serious comfort when I sleep and I have a bad ass body pillow that I swear by. Cuddles me right to sleep.

Worth every penny, I also have it with a protective cover and then a big pillow case. These are longer than standard body pillows so I suggest spending the money and buying the cases from the same company. I'm a side sleeper and have been using this for years before I ever even thought about being pregnant.
  • I love my snoogle! I also wake up a lot at night. Sometimes for 30-2 hrs. Just depends. On the late nights I'll get up and drink milk with a tablespoon of peanut butter. There was a thread a month or two a go and someone mentioned a hormone spike at 3 am.
  • I've been having no trouble falling asleep (no more than pre-preg, at least), and then I wake up once or twice in the middle of the night, pee, and go back to bed, and fall asleep no problem, so I can't really help. I use a Snoogle most nights, which helps me mostly to stay sleeping on my side. Last night I only woke up once, which I felt was a huge success.

  • A pillow between my knees greatly helped with my hip pain. I also added a memory foam mattress pad to my bed. I already had both of these things, so I didn't have to buy anything. I do have trouble falling asleep because my mind starts racing and baby girl likes to kick then too. I have my best rests when I exhaust my self during the day and take no naps.
  • I was waking up a zillion times a night. I had a memory foam pillow, a wedge pregnancy thing, regular pillows, all to no avail. I was sleeping like shit. I finally broke down and bought a stupid snoogle (I really despise that name) and much to my chagrin, it helped. I sleep better, and have no back or hip pain in the morning. I do still wake up to pee a couple of times and getting out of bed around the stupid snoogle is like an olympic event, but I usually fall back to sleep pretty quickly. Unless I wake up around 4ish. Then I check facebook or read for a few minutes until i fall back to sleep.
  • me! {waves hands frantically}
If the cat meows, I wake up. If my husband tosses and turns, I wake up. If the dog gets up and walks around, I wake up. If no one else gets up, the neighbors dog is barking.

    I can't win. I'm so tired.

  • Welcome to 2nd trimester and beyond! Sleeping was my favorite pastime until my first pregnancy with my son. I think it's definitely part of your body getting ready for mommyhood! Pillow between the legs sometimes helps with the hip pain for me and a body pillow too. But I can't remember the last time I had a full nights sleep without waking and my son is 8. My mom always jokes with me that you never sleep the same once becoming a mom, no matter how old they get.
