Anyone Else with SUA (Single Umbilical Artery)

I had an ultrasound at 16 weeks and the dr told me that my baby only has one artery in it's umbilical cord. She said it was only a concern if they noticed any other problems. She said that right now they don't see anything else wrong. She is going to refer me to a perinatologist for a more detailed ultrasound. She also said I would have more ultrasounds than normal. Does anyone else have experience with SUA?

  • We are in the same boat as you. Just found it yesterday at our MFM appt. We elected to have genetic screening done that we opted out of in 1st tri. We will have a follow up sono in 4 weeks to look at organ development and baby will have a fetal echocardiogram at 24 weeks. If everything looks okay after that they will closely monitor with NST and/or biophysical profiles weekly at the end of my pregnancy to make sure baby continues to grow. Don't google, it is not your friend, its full of nothing but horror stories. I'll be thinking about you as we go through this.

I did too and completely freaked myself out. Walked into my regular OB appt this morning with a handful of questions. The biggest take away I got was the most common issues he is concerned with is the kidneys and urinary tract development. And that babies tend to be born on the smaller side of normal. That will be a change for me because all 3 of my kids were over 8lbs at delivery.
  • I found out yesterday too. Let me know how things progress for you. I will pray for you and your baby, if that's ok with you.
  • My sister in law had a single in umblical artery... Her doctor also said that this is not an issue unless it's coupled with other problems... She delivered a healthy baby girl last December..
So ladies don't freak out just yet !!
  • My friend's son had a SUA and he is a perfectly healthy 2.5 year old today. They worried their whole pregnancy and she was monitored very closely but in the end everything was fine!

I went to my 20 w ultrasound yesterday and they found out that the umbilical cord has just 1 artery. Other organs are normal. and the baby measures 355 grams (12,5 oz) so it is 4 days bigger than expected.
I googled information about SUA and couldn't sleep at night but then I read all of your comments here and other topics on the Bump forum, so now I feel more relaxed. After 3 weeks I am going to do one more Ultrasound to check that the baby is growing. good luck everyone and don't worry:)
  • Hi @tikotik! That is great news that your baby is growing well! Can't wait for our next sono to check out all her parts and pieces! :)

p.s. I am vegetarian(from november2014) but that day when I found out about the umbilical cord anomaly I started to eat meat. Because of the artery the baby isn't receiving enough nutrients , so I can't continue with my Veggie belief thing..

It's stressful....just found out on Monday! She has been measuring below the 25th percentile in the past couple of sonograms. So they found that of the 2 arteries only one is working. They told me she will be small and that I should expect her to be delivered via c section the second any problem occurs 23 weeks or later! I'm only 21 weeks 3 days now. So we hope she will continue to just hang out in there for as long as possible without any more issues. Hoping to get to 30 weeks! My next ultra sound is sept 8th. Apparently they want to see me for an ultra sound every 1-2 weeks to watch blood flow in cord
  • Hey ladies. How are you feeling? We had our follow up scan yesterday and little girl looks great. She has all of her parts and pieces and weighs a pound. We go back in 4 weeks for another growth scan and a fetal echocardiogram. Our MFM Dr said that if all continues to look good then we will only have BPPs every 4 weeks to check growth and cord blood flow for the rest of my pregnancy. Can't wait for updates on your lo's!
  • My apt with a specialist is on the 24th just want to hear that she's growing and healthy!! Trying my best not to obsess over anything! I was also told that my placenta is covering my cervix so I'm hoping that has corrected itself by this next us
  • Today I went to my ultrasound. The doctor examined babys heart, brain, face, everything is ok:) he said i dont have to worry about anything , because baby is developing good. i am soo happy. she weights 740 grams (26 ounces) Girls, I wish you all the best, SUA without anomalies is just umbilical cord with 2 vessels, thats all. i hope my baby will grow till delivery. (sorry for my English, i am from Georgia:))
