For those with high BP who have been or will be induced...

I spent five hours in triage today monitoring my BP and baby after high BP readings at home and some pain with breathing. I'm 38 weeks today. They ran the pre-e tests (urine and blood), and they came back in the normal range. However, because my BP has ranged high on separate occasions, my doctor has suggested that I be induced at 39 weeks.

My question is: what has your experience been like? How many have successfully had vaginal births with inductions caused by high BP? Did they watch your BP like a hawk during delivery?

Any information you have is much appreciated!

Re: For those with high BP who have been or will be induced...

  • I was induced for gestational hypertension at 37 weeks, I did have a vaginal birth and had a great experience and recovery.  However, I had a fairly favorable cervix (though I was at a -3 station so DS2 had not yet engaged).  I didn't need pitocin and only needed my water broken to get active labor started.

I also had Pre-E with my first and both times my BP was monitored continuously throughout my labor and recovery.  Even after delivery nurses did a BP check every 2 or 3 hours, with my first I was still fairly high so I had to go into my OB office for a BP check every few days for a week or two.

I requested a cervical check at 36 weeks when we started seriously discussing induction.

  • I was induced on Wednesday due to high bp and lack of growth at 38 weeks. I was given 12 hours notice.

I ended up needing a c section due to no progression not high bp
  • I was induced Friday and the only complaint I had was that I was monitored crazy close. They also had me on magnesium for 48 hours, so I had a urinary catheter. I was induced at 37+5 and I had an amazing birth. They got my epidural in perfect the first time and I laughed my little man out after 12 hours of labor (I only felt like 30 minutes of it total) and only had a teeeeeeeny bit of tearing. The pictocin contractions hurts, but as soon as I got that epi I was so happy. I was only 1 cm before, after cervadil I was 3 cm, and then it took me 8 hours to get to 6, then from there it went super fast.
  • Had high BP readings the entire pregnancy (mostly top number which means stress). No pre-e so no induction. Had baby today, 8 days past her EDD, at home. Midwife checked it when she arrived and it was like 140-something over 90? I can't remember. After baby was born they took it again and it was textbook perfect - 120/83.

I was really stressed about giving birth again, as my last birth was pretty intense and painful. I joked that my BP mellowed out now that baby is here!

  • I was induced last week for high bp, low fluids and a true knot. They had the cuff taking my bp every 15 minutes then every 30 minutes. It took 3 days to induce me, they took it slow because of the possible knot but I had a very successful and easy delivery, I think because they did take it slow instead of rushing it. I was on a lot of monitors external and internal, I'm not sure if it was because of bp or all of it. My bp was perfect after delivery and the days after that, but at my postpartum visit it went back up to 140/90 so they gave me low dose bp meds. You can definitely have a successful delivery and they will watch you closely to make sure you and baby are okay since labor is stressful on you both.
  • Thanks for the responses everyone. I feel so confused with emotions right now. I go to the doctor today to discuss the induction process.

There's a huge part of me that is ok with scheduling it because the spikes in BP and difficulty breathing scared the crap out of me, but there's also a part of me saddened that I won't know what it's like to "go into labor" as silly as that sounds. I guess I'm just processing it all... I know that most important thing is a healthy delivery of my baby girl but this new wrinkle in an otherwise healthy pregnancy has thrown me for a loop.
  • I'm getting induced Wednesday... I'm feeling very overwhelmed.
  • I just got induced Friday for it. I had moderately high BP starting at week 37 but it would go down. I had to keep going to do fetal monitoring and ultra sounds a couple times for the last 2 weeks. But my doctor held out on inducing me until I was 39 weeks and 5 days. So I was almost 40 weeks. But anyhow we went in 9/11 and they wanted to start me on pitocin. I was really nervous because this is my 3rd baby and I've never had pitocin before and I was scared with everything else (the high blood pressure) they would say I needed a c section. Started pitocin at 8pm. They started me lowest dose because I was whining haha it did nothing (my first two kids were inductions too because they were late babies. They put cervadil gel on my cervix and I went into very rapid labor. That's what I wanted this time. I never had pitocin then. They said third time moms don't need cervix ripeness tho.) so anyhow they kept upping my pitocin and I was getting more annoyed because nothing was happening. Except. My blood pressure was falling! It was high when I went in but slowly kept falling to normal. I had to have the blood pressure cuff on the entire time and it went off every 15 minutes. Very uncomfortable and annoying. Finally at midnight I felt my first contraction. Then they were coming regularly but not that bad. I got nervous again thinking my BP would spike it stayed the same. The nurses suggested I get an epidural and I was like no these contractions aren't doing anything and I don't want to stall my labor. They checked me and I was 5 cm and were like yeah the contractions are working. So then I was like ok I'll get epidural so I can sleep I'm so tired. Got epidural at 2:30 and was like ok I'm going to sleep. The nurse said let me check you and see when we need to come in next. They checked me and I was complete. 10 cm ready to push. So I didn't get a nap and my labor start to finish was 3 hours. Blood pressure never spiked again. It was the easiest birth I've ever done. I know they told me that epidurals help to lower the blood pressure and that's usually their "course or treatment" when it spikes during labor. But they have to prep you for it with fluids and stuff because since your body is used to the high BP they don't want it to fall too quickly. So here i was worried about high BP then they had my worried about low BP. It was fine the entire time. Just focus on labor and not the BP. Good luck!
  • I'm being induce tomorrow morning for high Bp. All three of my labors will have been pitocin induced for high Bp. I've delivered each vaginally with no complications. With my second they had me on a mag drip but since my Bp was great after delivery I only had to stay 24 hours instead of 48.
  • I was induced at 37 weeks due to high blood pressure. My cervix was not favorable but was open 1 cm and they had to ripen it. They watched my blood pressure constantly and I even had to have IV hypertension medication once. I had have a successful vaginal delivery almost 24 hours after starting the induction process.

Thanks- I'll be 38 and 3 on Wednesday. They checked cervix today and I'm not open so I'm worried. Your story makes me feel better!
  • I know exactly how you feel. I was induced Friday at 38 and 4 and I was so torn about the process beforehand. I was only 1cm when we started but had a successful vaginal delivery 14 and a half hours after we started. I did have to get monitored constantly which was annoying because the wireless monitors kept slipping and even after birth they took my blood pressure every few hours and I felt like there was always someone coming in our out of the room to check me or baby. The piticoin was not fun but I dilated from 5 to 10 in 40 minutes so I missed the epidural window. Baby girl and I are home now and so much more relaxed. It wasn't my dream birth plan but baby girl and I are happy and healthy. I'm happy with my choice.
  • I was induced because my waters broke and contractions became inconsistent but because I'm on medication for my blood pressure they checked it really often but they were more concerned about my pulse rate because it was so fast at times but who can blame me when your going through that much pain

I was induced on a closed, high, hard as a rock cervix and baby totally hadn't dropped at all with DD1.  The entire process took about 31 hours, but they took it slow. They did cytotec first and then the foley balloon and pitocin. I wouldn't let them break my water until baby had dropped.  If they had broken my water when they first wanted to, she may not have ever dropped.  I did need an epidural and DD did have some heart rate issues at the end due to her cord being around her neck, but I had a vaginal birth.
