IUGR

I have had a very easy pregnancy thus far. However at my weekly appointment this past Friday (36 weeks) I had a routine ultrasound done to check on baby's growth, and he was found to be measuring in the 8th percentile at 5lbs 3oz.
So I have to go back for another ultrasound this Friday and if it is found that he has not grown at all in a weeks time they will induce me.
Not to happy about this and hoping anyone had a similar experience that they could share?
I've read so much that these growth scans can be highly inaccurate?

Re: IUGR

  • I don't have any advice to offer, just wanted to say I'm in the same boat. I mean, exactly the same boat. I also had an easy pregnancy, I am also 36 weeks along, my baby was also measuring in the 8th percentile at his last growth scan, and the decision to induce or not will also be made this Friday. Not a fun thing to be twinsies in, just wanted to let you know you're not alone! I was told he is small during an appointment at week 35, but my hospital won't do growth scans two weeks in a row, so I was stuck with a two week wait (when they tell me on Friday I will be 37 weeks). Last week I went in for an ultrasound so they could look at the placenta, umbilical cord, and amniotic fluid, but they couldn't (or wouldn't) tell me anything about his size. Thankfully, everything looked good, but I am still worried. It is so frustrating...knowing there is nothing I can really do to make him bigger, knowing that he could be above the tenth percentile and the measurements off--which we wouldn't know until after birth, knowing that he could be 100% fine and just small but might be taken out early unnecessarily. I wish you and your baby the best of luck!

  • Did they look at the cord flow? Has it slowed down or reversed? That's weird if baby wouldn't have grown at all. But if it truly hasn't it is worth getting induced so you don't risk stillborn. Baby is at fine weight and time where risks should be minimal. I am in the 9th percentile with IUGR since 20 weeks. 33 weeks now and I get monitored weekly. However mine has been growing on same curve and cord flow has been great whole time. But if it did slow down and I dropped under 5th percentile they would up monitoring. Normally they won't induce until around 3rd percentile, but if your baby hasn't grown at all then they would be better off outside. Yes weight is a guesstimate but if blood flow is slow or reversed that would be the true tell.
  • Oh and there is also a thread on high risk board you may find other similar situations. Good luck!
  • I would ask for an NST (or a couple, a few days apart) and a biophysical profile. Size measurements are highly inaccurate at this point. My daughter was being watched for IUGR and we had to do biweekly NST and biophysical profiles of the NST was poor. She made it to 38weeks 5 days before I had a c section. She was 6lb 8oz.

Yes, I'm in this boat too. I was having a normal pregnancy until about 34 wks when I measured small. Had an US @ 35 wks and was found to be 3rd percentile. I was referred to a perinatologist and at 36 wks had a normal US with normal dopplers, and measuring in the 4th percentile. Now the plan is weekly BPP and non-stress tests with induction at 39 wks as long as everything continues to look normal. Even though it's scary, I'm remaining optimistic, I feel him moving a lot which is reassuring. I've also been working to increase my protein and overall caloric intake, even though that wasn't specifically recommended to me.
