Trouble pooping

So I'm the proud mom of a 3-week old little boy, EBF...the past couple of days he seems to be having the hardest time pooping. When it started he would just grunt, turn really red, and maybe spit up some. I read this was normal tho. Then it progressed to crying out like he was in pain along with the other things I mentioned. All the while still having good pee and poop diapers. Now the poops are getting further apart, going on 12 hours without one, and you can tell he's trying to go, just having some trouble. He's actually fallen back asleep as I type this, so he's not in too much pain, but still no poop. Anyone else have this issue?? Any advice?? Thanks in advance!!

Re: Trouble pooping

  • EBF babies can go days without pooping, so I wouldnt worry about the length of time. My LO grunts and turns red when trying to have a BM as well, but its just them learning how to do so. Eventually in a couple more weeks they will learn how to do this more easily and will grunt less and stop turning so red when trying.

When my little one came home from the hospital she went almost 5 days without a poo. Babies bodies are extremely efficient with breastmilk. It's only since starting formula top ups (I have supply issues) that her poos went from every 3-4 days to roughly every 24 hours.

Mind you when she does poo...its big!!!
