Had a panic attack in Target. For no reason. Normal?

went shopping today, by myself. As I'm standing in line to check out and I start to have a panic attack. My heart starts beating out of my chest, I can't really breathe. The weird thing is.... It came out if no where.
I'm wondering if this is a pregnancy thing? Or just a fluke. Freaked me out. I'm fine now, but I'm scared it may randomly happen again.

  • Are you on any medications? I'd call your dr to see what they say.
  • I'm glad you're okay! From my experience, sometimes stores like Target or especially Walmart will hit me like that. Especially if I'm overtired, or in my previous life, hungover. Try not to overthink it happening again! That causes more anxiety, and it turns into a cycle. Take care!!
  • Yes and no. I mean I've had them before, but I usually have a stress trigger. I can't seem to catch my breath today which is weird. (Connected?) I just feel winded. Urgh.
No meds. Just prenatals. I'm going to call tomorrow. Just wanted to see if this was a "thing".
    Thanks

  • I get panic attacks some times but the other night I woke up in the middle of one. It was random and lasted 2 hours- shaking, racing thoughts, compulsions to do old rituals (from before OCD was managed) and horrible nausea, ending with me vomiting. From 3 to 5 am I was awake and could do a damn thing about it.

I had been having pain (then unexplained, now know it's from PGP) which probably freaked me out but I fell asleep just fine, woke up right in the middle of the damn thing! No warning, no symptoms, nothing.

Not because of Target specifically, but I have had palpitations a couple times that I had to cough hard through to get my heartbeat to settle down. I've read that the extra blood volume can cause them and my OB knows about them so I'm not too worried. It's not the same as a panic attack though, but definitely your doctor's office to let them know.
Eta was just thinking on this a little more, perhaps you had palpitations that led to a panic attack? I don't know that much about panic attacks but palpitations are always alarming even when you know what they are.
  • I've talked to my doc about having palpitations too, they come out of nowhere! She told me to take a count and when I did I was in the 90's, meanwhile I felt as if I was 150ish. She said our hearts are enlarged now and closer to our chest so we just feel the beats more at times. I just pulled my iPhone out and used the stopwatch for a few minutes and checked...try that before you worry too much.
  • I have had two out of no where where it feels like my heart is racing and breathing is labored , I think it may have been tied to my hypothyroidism ... Has your thyroid level been checked ? These two were before pregnancy and before i knew my dx of hypothyroidism .
  • I go in this morning! Yesterday was fine, no issues (aside from the ton of Braxton Hicks I had last night). I read that it might be brought on from dehydration, hunger or being tired.
thyroid was checked in the beginning, and that's ok. I do have low blood sugar this time around, so maybe it was related to that?

  • If you previously had panick attacks before pregnancy it is likely you will have them more often during pregnancy. I forget why exactly and im too lazy to google again lol but i just had one while putting makeup on didnt feel anxious or stressed at all its super weird how they come out of nowhere for no reason! Hope it doesnt happen to you again esp in public thats the worst.
