Bottle nipple flow

We just transitioned from bottle fed breastmilk to formula. We've been using Comotomo bottles and level 1 nipples (1 hole or slow flow). He used to eat 4 oz of breastmilk in 10 min every 2-3 hours. With formula, I'm noticing he's only eating 1.5-2 oz in 15-20 min every 2-3 hours. He produces enough wet diapers and now has 1 massive, stinky dirty diaper a day. He seems satisfied after each session... But is he tired from all the work or because his tummy is full? Wondering if it's time to switch to the level 2 nipple?

Your thoughts/advice?

What is your experience? TIA!

Edit: He is 7w3d old and ~12lbs (Was 7 lb 8 oz at birth)

Re: Bottle nipple flow

  • I also have the comotomo bottle. Just started using it so he could get used to the bottle. Mine came with the medium flow nipple (2 holes). I was worried at first but then I noticed when I accidentally spray him (because of letdown when breastfeeding) my nipple is the same way (as in more than one hole). He's 10 weeks now, the medium flow is designed for 3 months so he's almost there. I guess it's fine but it depends on your baby. Try it and see how he likes it. Also remember formula fills the baby up a lot more than breastmilk but consult with your doctor about it. Good luck!

  • @n3na94 thanks. It's just that I've been reading that many formula fed babies eat x amount every 3-4 hours vs 2-3 hours.

  • You can try the 2 flow, it wouldn't hurt and your baby doesn't like it, just switch back to the 1 flow. The transition might just take some time and getting used too :) keep working at it and it will be ok.
