Question about fit of breast pump shields

I'm using a double pump (Medela Pump in Style).  I'm thinking maybe the shields aren't fitting me correctly and that I might need bigger shields. The instruction booklet has a nice picture of a woman with the two bottles dangling and she's typing on a computer.  When I pump, I have to hold both of the bottles on b/c the weight will rip them off my boobs.  Also, milk leaks out the back of the shield and when I finish up and take them off, I get milk dripping everywhere too.

As a FTM I'm just wondering if this is the reality of pumping, or should I really be able to type an essay paper while I pump??

Re: Question about fit of breast pump shields

  • You just need to make sure that your nipple doesn't graze the very inside of the flange while you're pumping. I think only a really tight fitting hands free top allows for great hands free pumping (not the flange). I remember @CaliforniaDream87 having great hands free pumping bra recommendations. When I unhook, I usually get a few drops that drip down the flange that I try to tilt back into the flange.

  • I agree with everything @emmacake08 said. A hands free pumping bra will work wonders for you. This is the one of got. It fits snug so I don't have to use my hands at all. Very affordable too.

  • Hands free bra FTW! I cut two holes in some
Cotton hanes sports bras I had. Works fine. Waiting on my Amazon order but until then maybe you can do that too!
  • I bought bigger Medela pump shields because my nipples were rubbing on the ones I had- bigger size works for me. I used Medela sizing chart to figure out what I need, I think I had 29 mm and bought 31mm. Also bought hands free bra at BRU- lansinoh brand- works great for me. • ^^^ love the simple wishes hands free bra! I've tried a couple, and that holds the breast shields in the best. I would get too much milk spilling out with bras with a looser hole. The simple wishes has a few layers to secure the shield in, and the opening doesn't seem to stretch like it did in my medela hands free bra.
