Another TDap/Flu shot question

edited September 2015 in October 2015 Moms
Sorry for making a repeat thread, but I couldn't find what I was looking for in a previous thread. (I think my search option wasn't giving me all of them)

Anyway.... Those of you who ARE or already have asked your parents/visitors to get the TDap and flu vaccine, how did you word it when asking?

My boyfriend hasn't gotten a flu shot in years because his mother is completely against it, but he came home from work the other day with the surprise that he got it at work. We both got influenza last season and know how hard it was for us and can't imagine what it would be like for a baby to go through it. I'm really worried about how his mother will react when we ask her to get the vaccines. We really just want to lessen the risk even though there are several strands of influenza, the shot may be ineffective, etc etc... I just want to have my s*** together and have solid clear reasons when she says back that she will not get the shot.

Re: Another TDap/Flu shot question

  • We have asked family (especially those who travel for work or will be traveling in to meet baby) to humor us as uptight first time parents and please get both vaccinations so we can all enjoy being together with baby through flu season with as little worry as possible. They have been great about it so far, but it is a tough conversation to start. Remind them that coming down with the flu would mean a lot of time away for them too!

  • I just told them what my wishes were and why.my mil is also anti vaccine and I explained to her that as someone who has had whooping cough it is non negotiable for anyone who lives with us. Mil and my mom lived with us when we had our first. She was reluctant but she got it done.
  • I was super polite and just said I don't force anyone to do anything, however, we'd appreciate if you got the TDAP shot to aid in protecting our little guy. I didn't think about the flu shot because we had these discussions back in July. Everyone I allowed about it was either recently vaccinated or agreed to get it.
  • No one but mum during pregnancy needs the vaccine. The antibodies are passed through placenta and a bit during breastfeeding until baby gets his/her own vaccine. People who are sick need to stay away from baby regardless of having had the vaccine or not.
  • Easy breezy is best! Don't make a big deal about it. After your next appointment just say something like "Oh hey! By the way! My doctor wanted me to ask you guys to get a tetanus shot. I guess it's the vaccine for whooping cough which [the baby] can't get for a few months."
