Diaper bag contents - STMs help!

So, maybe this goes with the other diaper bag thread from today, but it seems different enough in my mind...

What all goes into a diaper bag??? Diapers, wipes, obviously..but what else? Do we really need a tactical duffle bag full of stuff?

Re: Diaper bag contents - STMs help!

  • Extra change of clothes for baby, bottles/formula or anything needed for breast feeding, burp cloth, blanket... it's been a long time and I can't remember everything! I do seem to remember that if I didn't put it in the bag, it was almost guarenteed I would need it that day.

  • What goes in ours depends a lot on how long we'll be out and how far we're going from home, as well as differing a little with age (I listed for starting out). I found it easiest with the outfit to pack a one-piece like a rompers or jumper. A couple burp cloths, a bib or two (if needed), a bottle and dispenser of formula (bottled water is easy to come by and bottle can be rinsed), I like to include a wetbag, if diaper rash creme is needed at the time I like to pack sample sizes. Past that I have a changing pad, wipes and zipper pouch with diapers. I also have a clutch with all my cards and cell phone and such.

If we go farther and will need more, I pack the extras in a basic tote.
  • FTM & love this post! And jumping in, while working on my registry today I saw a pacifier holder which is a small case meant to be used inside a diaper bag. Assuming this is a waste of money right?

Depends on how much you use the pacifiers. We had a cheap one with DS that we got a ton of use out of for the first few months. Pacifiers are so easy to lose and it's nice to always have that clean spare around when the one being used is dropped. Now he can safely use a binkie clip and the holder doesn't get used anymore.

The only thing I would say in hindsight is maybe look at the soft cases. We used a hard plastic one in Babies r us brand (it was cheap and we didn't know how much it'd be used). We had issues with it popping open.
  • Nappies & wipes, spare clothes for Bub, bibs or burp cloths, bottles and formula if formula feeding, blanket maybe a wrap if going somewhere for a while, dummies, probably a couple as they can go missing easily, as bun gets older maybe some teething supplies. I can think of anything else right now

I had one of the soft ones, baby ended up not taking a paci but I had to use a nipple shield and used it to keep that secure and clean.

And amen on the change of clothes, I didn't think it was a big deal to have that if I was just having a quick trip out of the house and she ended up having a blow out and I had to go buy something!

Diapers, wipes, rash cream, extra clothes, the baby blanket, spare rag, few nooks, and my daughter preferred her formula a little cold and being out for a while it's best to keep breast milk and pre made bottles chilled so we had a bottle case that held an ice pack. Also A tide stick and Lamaze toys.
  • Totally agree with pp but would also add (esp if your bf) to include a snack & water for you - like a kind bar or something. You can get ravenous when bf & it's nice to have a snack.
The bags are huge - use the space!
  • Don't forget an extra shirt for you! Projectile vomit is real and happens at bad times ;)

This is great! I never even thought about this! Clothes for babe, yes, it of course you might need something for you!

I have an issue with instant gratification and I desperately want to pack his diaper bag, I have 15 more weeks, but I'm actually excited to do this!
  • I always pack depending on how long we will be out. But always have diapers, wipes, change of clothes, extra pacifier, infant tylenol, extra formula and bottle, burp cloth and receiving blanket. I also have emergency bags packed in each of my cars with 2 diapers for each child, wipes, and extra bottle, 2 changes of clothes (1 warm, 1 cool) a jacket, a blanket and an extra shirt for me. Along with a first aid kit. We live in northern fl and the weather changes very quickly
  • Posting so I can follow this post. I am feeling the need to start making lists of all of these wonderful ideas you ladies have floating around, but then I'd have like 1000 lists!

  • Zip loc bags are a must. You are going to need something to put the poopy/spit up covered clothes in.
  • Wow! Okay! So maybe a big bag is necessary. Haha! Thanks!!! Keep those suggestions comin'!

I would take diapers and wipes, bottles with water, formula (pre-measured), change of clothes, changing pad with scented diaper sacks (see link below) and also use the diaper sacks for blowout clothes, bibs, blanket (can be folded up as a pillow when using a mall changing room thing) couple of toys, snacks when old enough for that. It'll change as they get older, too. Now I pack more snacks and toys than anything else.

Honestly, I'm a minimalist when it comes to packing the diaper bag. Most trips we don't go far from home and aren't gone more than 2-3 hrs so we don't need a lot. You'll figure out pretty quickly what you need. Starting out with DS we visited relatives that live close enough hubby could easily run back home for things as we worked out the kinks.
  • In the beginning you don't need too much : diapers, wipes, changing pad, change of clothes (I like pp suggestion of a shirt for you too... Esp in the early months), sanitizing wipes/gel (for you) and a nursing cover. Perhaps a few snacks for you as well, since breastfeeding can make you really hungry unexpectedly.

I also have a "survival kit" in my car with extra clothes, wipes and diapers in case I'm not paying attention and the supply inmy bag runs out ;) it's saved me a few times from leaving dd in a dirty diaper or simply naked lol

  • You've got some great suggestions so far, so I just want to add that some things will change by season and will depend on the weather where you live.

Since I live in Canada, and this baby is due mid-December, there will also be an extra hat/mittens/socks and possibly a spare sweater/jacket in my bag in addition to a change of regular clothes. I always have 1 or 2 receiving blankets when they're little, but will also add a thicker blanket in the winter. Those are the only specific examples I can think of at the moment, but you get the idea. :)

My bag always has the following: diapers and wipes, portable changing pad, burp cloths, two recieving blankets, change of clothes, a little zipper container with hand sanitizer, lotion, face wipes, chap stick, sunscreen, band aids, triple antibiotic ointment, water bottle for myself and my 4 year old, snacks. When I am watching a baby I have a clean bottle, small cooler filled with formula, or if it's my own baby a nursing cover and extra nursing pads. I also have a little fabric pouch attached to the outside of the bag to hold binkies. Don't need to go searching through the bag when baby is crying! Usually I carry around a small toy that has those plastic hook thingies to attach to the stroller or the car seat for baby to play with. And I there are usually cars or trains or something in there for my older son. And it doesn't fit in my bag, but I make sure I always have my Ergo when we go out.

A note on the extra change of clothes: make sure you have a full change every time you go out! I always have a onsie, pants, and socks for a baby and a shirt, shorts, Underwear, and socks for my older son. Bodily fluids can get everywhere!!! And you'd be surprised how many times will will need those socks in your bag. I always carry an extra pair for myself as well. Lots of play places require socks. Oh! And I have a little floppy baby hat in there as well for times we are out in the sun unexpectedly.

  • I love this post. Can't wait to pack my diaper bag! :)

^^^This! I learned this from breastfeeding though. Sometimes it can get a little messy either from leakage or just from baby unlatching after the milk has come down. When that happens, you suddenly become Old Faithful-geyser city!
  • I hated carrying a diaper bag and a purse and baby. I breastfed so no bottles/formula for me. I just threw a few diapers, a pack of wipes, and an extra outfit in my purse or car. I normally had hit wrapped/covered in a blanket.
  • You'll probably have a car or stroller if you'll be out any significant length of time. I plan on packing the minimum in the diaper bag and leaving a few extras in a canvas tote in the car or stroller bin. Baby will be heavy enough without a huge diaper bag :)
