Internal exam?

I will be 31 weeks on Wednesday and will be starting my every two week appointments starting on Thursday. I was wondering when do internal exams start? This will be my third and I just can't remember when the doctors starts these. I know every doctor is different but maybe there is a standard week that most start at. I just want to prepare myself for those so thank you for helping!

Re: Internal exam?

  • I see a MW and didn't have any internal exams with my first LO, and I prefer it that way. I believe most start at 34ish weeks.

  • I don't think I had an internal before 34+ weeks last time. This time I know they want to do my GBS test earlier since it's twins but I too have no idea when they'll start. Each doctor is different anyway.
  • I asked my MW the same thing because I know every place is different. I was told they don't "check" you unless you're past a certain point , I think 38/39W and you ask to have it done.l, otherwise they won't. They like to check as intermittently as possible because the more you get checked, the more risk of an infection occurring is possible and they could also accidentally strip your membranes. They don't check a whole lot during labor either. But this is also an Army hospital...
  • With DS I didn't have a single internal exam until I was being induced, even once I was over due. I was offered a sweep at my weekly midwife appointments from either 39 or 40 weeks but I declined. Everywhere is different though, even different providers within the same office, so ask yours.
  • With dd, asides from the GBS swab, they didn't check until 38 weeks. The sweep was done around 39 and 40 weeks but I still went to 41 weeks.
  • I think I was around 38 weeks with my first when they checked. It's a personal preferences. You don't have to get checked unless you want to.

I never had one with my Last midwife, I wasn't even checked when I went into labor. But with my first, normal healthy pregnancy, they started at my weekly appointments and a couple only because I asked and was curious if I was making any progress.
  • I had the strep test at 36 weeks. None before then. they ask at my office if you want them or not after that.
  • Mine won't check until my due date or if I'm facing induction for a medical reason. I was 39 weeks last time and she asked if I wanted to be checked.
They don't mean much and can spread bacteria so I would decline until the end.
  • Aside from the Strep test at 36 weeks. Ive never had an internal before 39 weeks

  • My OB will start at 36 weeks if you want to know. I think later on they would push having it done (like at 39 weeks) so they can see progress or lack thereof. If you are having a planned C-section for whatever reason they won't do them at all.
  • I got my first check at 31 weeks and found out that my cervix is very very soft. So I'm told to take it easy. But every doctor is different.
  • Everywhere and everyone seems different. I had my first one (with ds) at 30 weeks due to pelvic pain. And then I think I only had two more before I went into labor. With this baby and a different practice it's not even been mentioned, so who knows. I will say this though...I'm sure not going to go asking for one!
  • Swab at 36 weeks for me and optional cervix check since my OB will be "in the area".
I'll decline checks until 39 weeks though. They're not necessary.

I had an internal ultrasound at 27 weeks to check on my cervix because of my preterm labour scare but it was long and closed and I've been totally fine since then so I don't think they're needed.
