Formula feedings?

for moms who use formula how many ounces does you LO take? How often? How do you know when to increase the amount? How old is your little one? I've been breastfeeding, but having issues and supplementing frequently. Honestly tired of all the work and considering going to formula.

Re: Formula feedings?

  • My baby is 11 weeks, 9lbs 5oz. She eats 5oz every 4 hours or so. You'll know when to start feeding your baby more when they are not satisfied after feedings. If you look online you can find a chart that tells you how much formula to feed your baby based on weight.

  • My LO is 10 weeks and he is 12 pounds 4oz.. He eats 4oz every 3 hours
  • We've been transitioning from bottle fed breastmilk to formula this past week to week and a half and today is the first day of formula only.

LO is 7w2d, last weight approx on home scale was 11.5 lbs a week or so ago, he eats more during MOTN feeds (3-4 oz every 3-4 hours) and "snacks" frequently during the day 1-2 oz every 1-2 hours. I think he's just getting used to it but I do notice he eats it slower than breastmilk. He used to chug 4 oz of breastmilk in like 10 min. With formula, it's more like 1-2 oz over 15-20 min. Since day 1, we've been doing on-demand feedings so I just make small bottles of 2 oz at a time to minimize waste. Our formula (Baby's Only Organic with DHA & ARA) is only good for an hour after mixing. I have seen the charts online to gauge volume by LO's weight, but I plan to ask his pediatrician at his 2 month appt in a couple of weeks.

I feel ya regarding all the hard work with pumping... Good luck @randa923

  • I have twin boys who will be three months next week. At their two month check up a couple of weeks ago they were both about 12lbs. I breastfeed them at the "middle of the night" (which is anywhere from 4-7am) and then whenever they are fussy between feedings or seem to need a little extra. I use Gerber Good Start Gentle Supplementing formula and on average, they take about 5-6oz every 2 1/2-3 hrs, unless they sleep through a feeding. I just bumped them up from 4oz because they were looking for more after eating the 4oz bottle and nursing a bit.

One of the boys will take 6oz @ 11:30pm and sleep until about 7am...the other one will only take about 3-4oz @ 11:30 & sleep until 3:30.

I am basically formula feeding them and supplementing w/breastmilk but lol whatever
  • 7weeks. I'm giving 4 oz most of the time and he eats every 3 hours or so. at night, he doesn't eat as much bc he falls asleep in the middle of it. I just move his amount up when he isn't satisfied with what I'm giving more times than not. sometimes, with me giving 4 oz, he will turn around and eat another 1-2 oz 2 hrs later.
  • Thanks. Not feeding every two hours sure does sound nice! Still not sure what I'm going to do. I feel like I've been considering formula since like week one and haven't made the plunge yet except to supplement.
