The Sleep Struggle

Today, we ride the struggle bus. My LO will nurse for a half hour and fall asleep at the breast, nothing unusual. Today, he eats, falls asleep, held for about five to ten minutes, placed in bassinet, a few moments later wide eyes and rooting, put him back on, falls asleep, held, down, awake, rooting. All day. I think the longest he slept today is a half hour when I swaddled him and turned on the sound machine before I put him down.
Is this just something one-months do, or is my lazy eater just getting lazier?

Re: The Sleep Struggle

  • Around 5 weeks is a typical growth spurt. My son did the same thing for two days, by the end of each day I was going crazy. But then he slept on the 3rd day for most of the day. I had to just keep reminding myself it's a growth spurt and it will end!

  • Yeah sounds familiar as a growth spurt time! Try having your partner put him down when you're done nursing. My pediatrician suggested this and we had discovered it on our own even before she mentioned it; baby smells moms milk and scent, so they immediately associate us with food, he *might* not be hungry every single time but rooting because it's there (but read the cues and learn which is which). My husband can set him down much more easily than i can, just accepts it rather than reaching for the breast.

Mine was/is a sleeper on the boob, too. It gets much better though! What I'd do was feed him on one side until he stopped and got sleepy, then my husband would change his diaper to wake him up, then I'd put him on the other side to finish eating. This way he's getting a full meal, not falling asleep before he was really done and needing to eat again immediately. Congrats and good luck!! :)
  • Thanks! It's so nice to know it's a normal thing. Just when I think we have this BF nonsense down, he goes and throws me a curve ball! Ah, motherhood :)
  • Yep, sounds like a growth spurt.

Do you babywear?  It might get him to sleep a little longer because it's essentially the same sensation as being held close to you.
  • My LO started nursing for like 15-20 minutes every 2 hours around 6 weeks...that lasted 2 weeks. Now starting yesterday he is eating for only like 10 minutes at a time. And then needs to eat all. the. time. I'm praying this only lasts a day or two
