Having to start maternity leave early, freaking out!

So I'm 32 weeks and some change and my doctor has put me on bed rest for the rest of my pregnancy to try and avoid preterm labour! I don't know what to do with myself! I'm a chef so I'm so use to being busy doing long hours and that was the only thing that kept me sane and stopped me from going baby crazy! Has anyone else finished work yet? What are you doing with yourself/time?! It's been 3 days and I've already completely disinfected and cleaned everything including all baby's clothes and mine! I've organised my whole house ready for baby I've got everything I need for her arrival I'm packed she's packed what am I going to do for the next month?! Any tips on what everyone's doing not to lose their mind playing the waiting game?

Re: Having to start maternity leave early, freaking out!

  • I stop working this coming Thursday. I asked around and the answers I got (that I remember off the top of my head) are: Netflix, nest, Netflix, read, nap, prepping frozen food, and more Netflix. I'll probably also be going out to the library/a park/ the mall/ a coffee shop/helping out my SO at his office at least once or twice a week to keep from losing my mind.

  • If your doctor has put you on bedrest you need to take it easy! My DD was early, and while she was healthy, if was incredibly scary! Rest, read, Netflix, but don't overdo is with excess cleaning and cooking. Enjoy your calm before the storm.
  • Easier said than done, but I agree with PP... Rest up while you have the chance. Find a good book or two, maybe some DIY projects for baby? Take it easy woman!
  • Thanks ladies! While I understand bed rest means to rest I can't stay in bed litterally all day every day I will go insane. Netflix has been my go to so far but im not sure how long I can be stuck doing that (Australian Netflix is limited) I suppose I'll have to start being a bit more social and try to arrange some coffee dates or something so I have aleast a little human interaction!
  • I'm seconding some of the above posts. Bed rest means rest. Most docs have a certain number of hours total during the day that you are allowed out of bed and definitely no driving or coffee dates. If you don't follow it you may end up in the hospital for the rest of your pregnancy. I would call your doc first thing and clarify what exactly they want you doing.
  • I was on bed rest from 35 weeks to 41 weeks with my daughter. My midwife wanted me on the couch or in bed the majority of the day. Naps were amazing. I did lots of TV watching and reading. It was actually really nice.
I hope to avoid that this time because it did eat into my maternity leave.
But you might want to clarify what they mean by bed rest. They may not want you out and about. Mine didn't.
  • So after calling my doctor it turns out he ment literally stay off my feet for the remainder of my pregnancy he has however given me the all clear to do some light swimming every few days to help relieve pressure which is good! It's going to be a long month! Any book/TV series recommendations? :)

Anything that you like? I just finished watching Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries and loved it. It's on Netflix here in the States but I know it's originally an Australian program so it should be available on yours?

Glad that you called your doctor & got that figured out!
Unsure what you have on Netflix but here are a few that I watch/have watched...

    Orange is the New Black
    Melissa & Joey (my favorite!)
    Breaking Bad
    The Walking Dead
    Friends

    Goodluck!
  • The Tudors or Sons of Anarchy on Netflix. Game of Thrones if you have HBO.

Enjoy your bed rest the best you can!

I'm guessing this is your first baby? I know you're probably itching to stay busy but look at it this way... You won't get this time to be quiet or selfish again for a LONG TIME. Enjoy watching whatever, napping whenever, closing the door when you pee, long baths, long showers, reading books etc. trust me these are all things I took for granted with baby number one! If you get bored maybe invite friends to you for a drink and a catch up. I'm not sure how your kitchen is set up but you could try cooking (obviously if your a chef you're good at this!) maybe get a high stool and you could sit as you cook. Freeze dinners ready for when baby comes.

    Try to enjoy it :)

Yes! I miss privacy so much! Yesterday my DD broke into the bathroom, at my DH's suggestion, in order to give me a wet willy!
  • I've been on bed rest since 27 weeks, I got myself a 1,000 piece puzzle, crossword puzzles, sudoku puzzles... Ordered a lot of books. Started learning more about my camera so I can take the best pics of the babies once they are here... Also try to come up with a routine, what time you eat, wake up, shower, try to sit outside at least an hour a day... I am also a very active and busy person but it does get easier, and knowing you are doing what is best for your baby is all that should matter.
  • Male strippers! Kidding. Sort of.

Do you like to read? iBooks is my new best friend these days between work, school and preparing for baby I have little free time. Most of my free time is spent on the train going from one thing to the other. And iBooks has been really helpful.

I know it must be hard but it will fly by. Rest, take care of your body and it will all work out for the good.
    Do unto others.
  • I'm a head chef also @shayshayshah . In addition to PPs, you could start some online early Christmas shopping!
  • Start a baby book there is a lot to fill in before baby actually comes. Organize pictures on your computer and back them up (this one will take awhile if u are like me with thousands of pics). Make some crafts that can go in baby's room. Organize recipes that you may have and have a nice list of easy meals for when baby does come. Of course there is always Netflix, redbox and books.

  • Edit- Oooh do you know what else my husband got me recently and I LOVE? An adult colouring book with nice pens. My fave is called "the enchanted forest". I'm not arty at all but I'm finding it so enjoyable and relaxing.
I second the coloring books! I am rather in love with my adult coloring book and colored pencils. Splurge on some nice pencils or pens if you can afford it (I love my set of woodless pencils, no wood means the lead can't break when you sharpen in!). There are lots of good
Books, just search "adult coloring books" on amazon and pick the one you like. I have the Secret Garden book and love it. It's very relaxing and almost therapeutic.
  • I just got put on the good ol bedrest. I'm going to lose my mind! Who has time for bed rest for 5 weeks!!! My husband is going to be bombarded with texts while he's at work. I'm guessing a lot of "whatcha doin?" And dogs pictures
  • Lots of t.v., books and cross stitching.
  • Make a scrap book!
  • Make a scrap book!
HOLLER!!!  Ha I'm obsessed with scrapbooking so if I had been put on bed rest (knock on wood I haven't) this is probably what I would have done.
  • Movies, Beach, Prep meals to freeze, Start a Baby book, Online shopping, Morning strolls, Get a massage or pedicure..
  • I started maternity leave this week. Of course like everyone else everything is harder and everything hurts and is so very uncomfortable. I picked out a few craft projects to spend time on from hobby lobby today. With having this much prep time getting my house in order and organized is where I am spending time. I try to pick a few things everyday to get done. Today was prep pad sickles and two frozen meals. It kept me busy for a few hours with out feeling like I was going to fall out. Oh and the never ending stream of laundry has been constant. I haven't even made it to baby clothes yet. 35 weeks!
