Water birth??

So lately i've been thinking a lot about water births. My pregnancy has been pretty awful so far, I've puked LITERALLY every single day since 7wks, my appetite goes back and forth from crazy hungry to gagging at the thought of food, the headaches are constant and I was hospitalized at 14wks because of dehydration, and my stomach was completely raw from not being able to eat.

Throughout all of this, the only thing that made me feel better was taking a shower. At points, I was sitting in the shower for 3-4 hours because all my pain went away the second the water hit me. Im 35wks now, and still only find relief from being in water. My sister brought up water births a couple weeks ago, saying that maybe water was the one thing that kept me calm enough to endure the pain. But now I have a bunch of questions that I just can't wait another week and 1/2 to ask my OB and decided to see if anyone here has the answers!

First, at 35wks is it too late to decide to have a water birth? Also (probably a really dumb question) but do they do water births in hospital? I've only ever heard of the kiddie-pool-in-the-living-room method, and there is no way I want to do that. Any information on water births would be greatly appreciated!!!

Re: Water birth??

  • Most hospitals let you labor in water. I'm having a water birth at a birthing center. My first pregnancy I was a homebirth transfer. I was planning a water birth, but got in the water too soon and it stalled my labor. My suggestion is labor in the water but don't stay in for your entire labor. Water was my only pain relief, and because I didn't change things up and move around the contractions slowed down and eventually stopped. When I got to the hospital they put me on pitocin and had to give me a light epidural to calm me down and help me relax.

  • Depends on your hospital. Mine doesn't allow for actual delivery on the water but I can be in the tub or shower all throughout labor until I'm ready to push. It definitely helped with my first! My cousin had all 4 of hers naturally and the last was a full water birth in a birthing center and she said it was the most calm, easy delivery of all of them!
