You can do a search on this, but common responses to not drinking are
-"I think I'm getting sick" or "I'm just getting over a bug"
-"I'm on antibiotics and I'm not supposed to drink with them"
-Most of my friends know that I deal with acid reflux so I've just been saying my reflux is bad and I don't want to aggravate it. Then I "fake sip" DH's drink.
-Depending upon the situation, sometimes you can get a fake cocktail (sprite with a lime on the rim, or something) to pretend you're drinking. Or you can get a beer bottle and dump it and fill it with water.
In terms of food, not sure. You could always say "oh last week I had some bad X, I think I got sick from it, so I'm not sure I can stomach it right now".
Thanks! The hardest has been when my MIL gives me something to try. I've googled some stuff too. I like the felt weird last time I ate this and the fill beer bottle with water! Smart!
If the food being offered isn't super healthy, you could always say that you're doing a healthy eating program. This could work with alcohol too as you could say you don't want the extra calories.
This is a little unrelated, but I spent the weekend with my SIL, but haven't told anyone except one friend I'm pregnant. We took our kiddos to the zoo yesterday. I was getting nervous about how nauseous I was feeling, so called friend. She recommended I just blame the nausea on the zoo food!
