Why some women deliver earlier ??

i know a lot of us are approaching our due date fairly quickly but seriously not quick enough! Between sleepless nights, back pains, lightening crotch, and nausea with a side of heartburn we are about ready for the 9 month journey to come to end and meet our LO. Having said that - just curious - does anyone know what contributes to moms who end up delivering early - like 38 weeks? I don't want to labor earlier then I'm supposed to naturally but just wondering why some
Women go earlier!

  • 40 weeks gestation is an average.
    37 weeks is full term.
It is completely normal to birth anywhere from two weeks before your EDD to two weeks after.

  • Um I'm kinda confused by your question. Are you wondering why the go into labor at 38 weeks? If so it might be because labor is a spontaneous event and we don't pick when it happens. If you are wondering why they are induced or have a c section early it may be because of a medical reason for the mom or baby.
  • I would also add that many women do not know exactly when they ovulate or when they conceived. Dr.s are only giving you their best estimate in the form of a due date.... And that combined with the above = we just don't really know. Babies come when they want to! :)

  • Thanks for the feedback. Just a general question if anyone knew / heard of nonmedical reasons such as being petite stature / family history/ nature of physical activity towards the end of third trimester.... Things like that. I know anyone could go 2 week before or 2 weeks after ... Just wondering if anyone heard of old wives tale of why certain women (FTM) go earlier then others.
  • I delivered 2 weeks early (went into labor naturally) with my first. My dr predicted that this would be the case and predicts that it will be the case again this time. I'm sure the reasons why a doctor would expect this vary, but for me I have a family history of delivering early and my size -- I'm 5'1" 90lbs (pre-pregnancy). She thought with my size I was unlikely to grow a big baby so I would likely give birth before the baby got too big, which is exactly what happened -- 5lbs13oz.

Hi Jasmine - I've been told it's less to do with the mother herself and more to do with the baby.  Lots of mothers have said the like "My first was late, my 2nd was 10 days early, my youngest was 1 week overdue...." etc.  *Assuming there are no complications and the pregnancy and fetus are healthy*

This! My first was 3 days late, my 2nd was 9 days early and my youngest was induced on her due date because I developed cholestasis (she was going NOWHERE anytime soon). There was never any reason given, but I did spend about 8 hours on my feet icing a Wilton cake for DS#1 the day before I went into labor with DS#2 (they are 2 years and 1 day apart) and I've always suspected that may have done it.
  • I'm 4'10 and went 2 weeks past due with my first. I don't think size, age, or family history really contribute. Every labor is different and sometimes babies are either ready to come out, while others get really comfy in there! No 2 labors are alike! I'm interested to see when my 2nd will come.
