Twin/Multiples Check In

Hi there mamas! TGIF!

How are you all doing?  We haven't had a check in for a bit, so I thought this Friday may be a good time to vent/share your latest feelings and news.

I just had my anatomy scan (finally)! And I am so overjoyed to share we are having a baby boy and baby girl!  They are both healthy and look great; I am so happy my heart may burst.  I have been experiencing really bad pain in my rib cage, and during the scan, I realized why.  Baby girl's feet are right on my rib cage, as is baby boy's head.  I imagine this will only get worse so I just need to get used to it I figure.

I am super excited the weather is cooling down here in the northeast finally.  Ready for fall and cozying up at home while these babies grow bigger and bigger.

Anyway, hope you are all doing well!

  • Happy to hear you have two healthy babies!!
Isn't it crazy how far they've stretched already? My bump wasn't nearly this big with my previous single babies.

Glad it's cooling off down here in Georgia as well! I will take 76 tomorrow over the high 80s and humidity any day!

  • I'm good here as well. Will be 21 weeks tomorrow. Found out we are having 2 baby girls. We r going to name them Jacalyn & Madalyn. Both were about 11 ounces during the AS at 20 weeks and everything looks good. However I'm still exhausted and I don't sleep well at all! I feel like i get bigger everyday and i move slower lol. I'm having stress with my mother which if it don't get settled I will not be returning to work. Below is my 20 week bump
  • Hi all,
I'm 23w and doing well. We're the opposite here, it's getting hotter moving into spring/summer. I'm not sleeping well and pretty tired most of the time, I just can't get comfortable on my side!! I had an appointment with my OB yesterday, all looks well, the babies were in breech facing each other and pushing at each other through the membrane. I have to go for my glucose tolerance test in a couple of weeks which I'm dreading because I hate needles/blood tests!! I'm thinking of requesting another 3D scan at 26w instead of waiting until 30w, just to check up on my little boys heart to give me peace of mind.
We're going to start looking at baby shops this weekend and see if we're going to set up a registry, which is exciting! Hopefully we can get some discounts for all the stuff we'll need!!

@keshakdavis you and your little girl are in my thoughts a prayers! I can't even imagine how you're coping without your husband, I hope your family and friends are being super supportive. Also with pains, I had one trip to the ER about a month ago because I was having pains all day, fortunately nothing was wrong and it was probably just ligament pain. Other than that I haven't had lasting pain, just get uncomfortable really easily. I make sure I stretch really well when I'm at the gym to help with back pain.

My bump pic was taken at 22w!
  • I've had the round ligament pain. It's sharp and really painful but doesn't seem to last long. Also already been having Braxton Hicks contractions, which makes me nervous. Luckily, they stop when I am able to sit down and rest, but it isn't always possible quickly when I have two young boys to take care of.
Everything is twice the nerves with twins.
Hoping all of your testing goes well and little girl is completely healthy @keshakdavis
  • You all look fantastic! Hope that helps lessen the load and eases some RLP for you today :-) @keshakdavis way to stay positive! I think things will work out with your baby girl too.

Here is my bump to add to the mix.

  • Hi ladies

I count my weeks based on this calendar so at 22 weeks I guess I'm 5 months.

I'm enjoying the experience and get kinda sad to know at times that I'll soon be home stretch but at the same time I'm super excited to meet my little ones. So I have mixed emotions from time to time.

  • I don't like that chart since 1- it goes to 42 weeks and 2- none of us will ever be 9 months pregnant by that calculation. I prefer this one

  • I use the one you use @happyandhopeful3. I just made 22 weeks Saturday so that puts me at 6 months. I don't see any of us making it past 40 weeks. Most single pregnancies don't even make it to 40 weeks.

  • I'm 20 weeks and really feel pretty good. No complaints except no movement yet :( my anatomy scan last week was pretty good and the babies measured 11 and 12 oz (I was 20 w 1 d). I'm anxious to get the nursery done!

  • Have you ladies talked to your Drs about delivery dates?
I think I've mentioned before, but my Dr said we're aiming for 37w. Since I'm getting induced we'll do it on the 16th of Dec.

Also, is anyone attending antenatal classes? The hospital I'm delivering at offers a course over 6 weeks, for 2.5hrs/week, which costs $250. I may sound like a naive first time mum, but do I really need 6 weeks of classes?! They also offer a once off 3hr multiples class which I think will be much more appropriate.
  • It's just so confusing figuring out the month you're at when here on the Bump week by week fruit update says at 22 weeks your the size of a papaya and refers to it as month 5!

Not to also mention that the calendar above @happyandhopeful has accounted 5 weeks for months 3 and 6 but 4 weeks for all the other months. Not sure why.

I think I'm better off counting weeks than trying to count the months.

@emmalc16 my doctor has also given me a tentative date at 37 weeks but have not yet indicated if I'll have a C section or vaginal delivery.
  • @aminafleming I'm not sure yet either about vaginal or cesarean. My Dr said it will become very clear by about 30 weeks depending on how the babies are positioned. My little girl is the lower down baby so will be the first out, and if she's engaged and ready to go, then we'll try for a vaginal birth. Apparently the second baby can come out breech because the first baby will have created a nice wide opening!! That made me laugh and cringe!
  • Half of the docs in my practice are willing to deliver vaginally if the second baby is breech; the other half are not. I honestly do not have a super strong opinion about vaginal vs. C- whatever gets the babies out safest. However, that being said, I am very much opposed to recovering from a vaginal delivery and C section. So I am not willing to risk getting the first baby out only to be told I need a C section for the second.

I will likely elect a C section as a result. Unless both babies look like they're in good head down position right before. My doctors said if I get to 37 weeks, I can schedule a C.

  • My doctor has only mentioned a vaginal birth because I delivered my son vaginally. Of course if one of the babies are breech then there is not really an option but I do hope to deliver them both vaginally. The recovery time for c-section is too long and when you have 2 babies to tend to I can't imagine the difficulty. Plus trying to breast feed. Nope, give me vaginal any day, unless I have no choice. My doctor also said I wouldn't go past 37 weeks which puts me delivering the last week in December. Of course babies could come sooner but it wouldn't be later than that. I'm glad to have a date so I can start planning my maternity leave.

  • @happyandhopeful3 I had not thought about the chance of having 1 baby vaginal and 1 baby cesarean! That would be so awful. I think I might pose that question to my Dr next visit. That is very interesting about the differing opinions of the Drs within your practice.

  • When I asked if we ate aiming for 37w, my MFM said he was aiming to get me to 35w.
I asked if he thought I was likely for C-Section and he jumped on "We can schedule it now if you like. I should be here that week."
I do not want a C-Section if I can avoid it, but like mentioned above, I would prefer to not have one of each.
My mom nearly did one of each with me and my sister, but she kept jumping when they tried the epidural and I eventually fell from horizontal to breech. We were 32w and apparently I was small enough to just go for it.
My mom keeps telling me she doesn't want me to have a C-Section, but if it meant they could stay in longer and be bigger she would always vote for C-Section over NICU. We were in NICU 4 weeks (sister) and 5w5d (me) and I nearly didn't make it.

  • @TTiger03 Is there a particular reason your Dr said 35w?

In terms of cesarean vs. vaginal, I'm going for whatever gets everyone out safest and healthiest!

    This! ☺️
Although I am hoping they are head down and I can avoid c section
  • He didn't say anything in particular other than "everything". I have twins, hypertension, gestational diabetes (fasting fails only), hypothyroud, weight, family history of early delivery. I think he and the nurse looked at the fat girl and assumed the worst then found that all the high risk stuff is there. I had almost everything under control before hand but he is most concerned about what changes will happen as the babies get bigger.

  • @TTiger03 Sorry for asking such a personal question, I shouldn't have assumed it would be a simple answer! I hope everything goes well for the rest of your pregnancy and you can avoid an early delivery.

Are you a twin? I am a twin as well. Silly of me to ask if you're a twin when I just read your post lol. One of those silly questions us twins do not like to have asked when it is obvious lol. My questions is are you and your sister identical or fraternal? I have an identical twin sister and people are so shocked that I am a twin having twins. I have to let them know that identical twins are spontaneous, not hereditary like fraternal.

  • Hi ladies

I experience Braxton hicks contractions on a nightly basis if I'm lying still in bed. My feet have also been swollen for just about s week now. The biggest I've seen them throughout my pregnancy. Have you ladies been experiencing any of these symptoms ?

When I'm turning from my back to my left side on the bed I practically have to lift my tummy to help roll over. Lol. Lots of weight in there now. I'm huge!!!

My next doctor spot is on the 21st so I'm taking the weekend to put together my questions for her. She has a policy like if I don't say something is wrong then everything is fine. But I hate that I'd much rather she talk and be more verbal to me instead of me having to ask 101 questions at each visit.
  • Hello everyone, Im pretty new to the bump but I consider myself a veteran mom as my eldest son just left for college, and I have one in high school and two in middle school. At 37 I've been a mom my entire adult life, and was pretty suprised to conceive 10 yrs after being told we were done. Im having a boy and a girl and since I've already had three C-Sections I have no choice but to have another, as a V-Bac isn't optional after two C- Sections

@emmalc16 most of those over priced classes are not very beneficial, as you can get that same information from books and the web for free, unless a person is having a complicated pregnancy that will lead to birthing issues or defects. Then the appropriate class will help. Also some insurances cover a few of the prenatal classes offered so that could help save a few bucks.
The one class I do suggest is baby/child CPR.
  • @keshakdavis We are fraternal (different as night and day). I'm expecting fraternal boys.

Twins are all over my family tree. All four of my grandparents had twins close to them. My dad has twin cousins on his mom's side, one of whom had twin sons. Dad's dad had twin brothers. My mom has twin half brothers through her mom, one of whom has twin grandsons. Her dad had twin cousins.

    ---
I wanted a girl, but thinking about family dynamics, the boys get along as best friends and the girl pairs tend to fight like cats and dogs even though we all love our twin deeply.
There are no boy/girl pairs I know of.

My uncles are mirror twins (left vs right handed) but the rest of us are fraternal add far as I know.

I told my husband if he didn't want twins he should have married differently. Now my brother-in-law is freaking out they might have twins too.

  • Wow that is so interesting! As far as I know there is only one pair of fraternal twins and they are on my dad's side of the family. My sister and I are the only identical on both sides.

  • Me again. Pregnant with one but lurking because I have 17 mo old twins.

@TTiger03 I had my twins at 35+1 (one of my waters broke at 10 pm when I was 35 weeks.) My girls were only in the NICU for 3 days and have thrived since then. I'm a huge proponent of keeping twins in as long as possible, but mine certainly are doing great despite being early and little. Size wise they're just now kind of catching up (my dh and I are small, though, so we wouldn't have big babies in any case) but developmentally they've been ahead for a while.

I delivered vaginally and I'm so happy I did. They were my first babies so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I'm really happy I didn't have to recover from surgery during those first weeks. My stance was that I was cool with whatever had to be done to keep them healthy, but really really really didn't want surgery if we could avoid it. I was lucky me and the girls didn't need it. I was shooting for no interventions but didn't quite achieve that, nor did I expect to with twins.
  • @blacklace08 Thank you for the advice! I have booked in for a 3hr multiples class today, I'm hoping it will cover most things. Congratulations on your boy/girl twins and welcome to the Bump!   :)
