Feeding schedule

hi. So I'm s longtime lurker & have learned so much from all of you! I orginally was nursing my LO but stopped due to latch issues(sucking in too much air) so now we bottle feed BM during day & formula at night. I was originally feeding on demand, but now I'm wondering if I could set a feeding schedule and follow that with a nap schedule. He is 5 weeks old. Is it possible or is he still too young?

Re: Feeding schedule

  • I have no prior experience as I am also a FTM. But, my LO is also 5 weeks and I just cannot imagine trying to put him on a schedule. He's got a sort of schedule going but it still pretty fluid. I think it would only stress me out more.

  • I personally feed on demand at this age. When they are a few months old I remember them being in a more natural rhythm but I didn't put them in one. I know there's a thread about "Babywise" which does have LOs on a schedule if you want to check that out.

  • My lo is 5 weeks tomorrow and we have him on a schedule. As pp said, check out the baby wise post.

Same as this. I really didn't get into a set eating and napping pattern until a few months in.

  • Thanks! The baby wise thread is what prompted me to ask this question. I personally feel that he is too young/unpredictable to be on a times schedule. He somewhat has his own schedule, feeding every 2-3 hours, then we play, then I try to put him to sleep for a nap. Some days are hit and miss tho
  • If you are seriously interested, I suggest reading the book. I've seen it work every time someone follows the guidelines, so I'm a firm believer. I've also seen it working with my son already at 5 weeks.
  • Thank you! I may see if the library has a copy!
  • I also don't believe in placing my baby on a feeding schedule this young. At this point we feed on demand and that's what's best for us.

  • We also feed on demand but LO is pretty predictable at wanting to eat every 4 hours. Whether he's awake or waking up from a nap, we can pretty much count on 3-4 oz every 4 hours (bottle feeding).
  • My LO has been on his own schedule since 2W we are FF. He has been on the same times almost every day since we went to Formula. He stays within the same hour/two three to four hours a part. So he eats 9/10AM then 12/1PM between 4-5PM 7-8 then 10/11PM sleeps till 3/4AM eats and goes back to sleep within 20min up between 5-6AM to eat again and back asleep.

From the start I made sure to not turn lights on at night so he knows bottle with lights off we go straight to bed after. Daytime I will talk to him, play, smile make eye contact. When getting him to go three to four hours a part I would use a pacifier to help hold him over for a few. But if he was clearly hungry we didn't push it.
