Doctor appointments

What doctors appointments are important for dad to go to? I feel like he should go to all of them.

Re: Doctor appointments

  • That's up to you and it depends on your dr. Do you get an u/s often? My husband goes to all of mine but I get an u/s at every one. I'd say he'd probably only be really engaged at those. :)

My H will go to 12, 20 and 36 weeks (u/s appts). A lot of the regular check ups are really boring and literally last 5 minutes.

  • The ones with an u/s are the only ones that my DH went to (dating at 8 weeks and a/s at 18 weeks). All the other ones are just you peeing in a cup, getting weighed, answering questions like how do you feel and do you have discharge, OB may measure belly, and that's it. I don't know why a DH/SO would need to be at every single appt.

  • When I asked DH if he wanted to attend all of the appointments he looked at me like I was growing an alien in my womb! He chooses to accompany me and I enjoy sharing even the mundane aspects of the pregnancy with him. I lucked out, I guess; I didn't expect him at any appts other than the scans.
  • Thanks alot for your thoughts
  • I don't think they HAVE to go. Most of these Appts are pretty uneventful. So I guess it's up to your husband. Mine wants to go to most appts but realistically won't make all of them.
  • Ultrasounds (3 total) and hearing the heartbeat for the first time. That's all that makes sense to me, otherwise it's a lot to ask for a quick 5min checkup.
  • I wouldn't expect my SO to attend every appointment with me. The first of course, then ultrasound appointments. The rest are pretty boring and quick at least for me, but I can see how high risk moms' appointments would be more interesting with more ultrasounds. However, SO has only missed two appointments so far at almost 27 weeks because he was out of town. He enjoys them and hearing that the baby is doing well. We will see how excited he is to attend the bi-weekly and weekly appointments coming up, though ;)
  • DH came with me to 12 weeks (our first ultrasound), 16 weeks (because they didn't play the heartbeat at the ultrasound and I wanted him with me the first time we heard it) and 20 weeks (A/S). But I don't plan on bringing him to the next few appointments.
  • I recorded the baby's heartbeat on my iPhone memos and emailed it to DH with both pregnancies. The funny thing is that this time, after I recorded it, I played it for my daughter while we were waiting on the OB to come in the room. She said, "Cookie Monster! yum yum yum!" She's 2.

  • My DH has been to every apt. He wants to be there for every one. He likes talking to the doc and asking questions. It's important to him to be there every step of the way.
  • DH has been to every appointment. We are first time parents and he says he wants to be as involved as possible. I have mentioned a couple of times that he didn't have to go to the regular checkups but he insists on going so I'm not gonna fight him on it:). He really does like hearing the heartbeat at every appointment.
  • My DH is the exact same way..

DH went to the first, the anatomy scan and the NST (at 40 weeks). Its completely up to you (and him) about which appointments he goes to. Most of the time its, weight/BP, pee in a cup and Doppler listen-- and that's it. Not terribly exciting or eventful.

  • My appointments are in the afternoons, so my DH has been able to go. It was nice having him with me and he got to hear the hb.
  • DH only went to the anatomy scan appointment.

  • So far he has been to two. The first appointment and the A/S. He took half days for those appointments so we don't feel it's worth sacrificing pay to attend regular appointments. He asks me about them though, but will probably only attend any others if he's already not at work.
If he has questions usually I know the answer or we look it up together in what to expect.
I think there are other ways for him to be involved other than watching me get weighed.
  • my husband has gone to most of mine, but he'll miss the next one because he has to work. I'm ok with it. The midwives I just switched to don't use a doppler unless they can't find the heartbeat using the fetoscope, don't have me pee in a cup unless there's a need, and I won't have any further ultrasounds. They'll just palpate my belly a bit, chat with me and see if I have questions. There's no need for him to come to every appointment.
  • DH has only been to my initial ultrasound (viability check at 6 weeks). He has no real interest-possibly will come to the anatomy scan but that's about it. He jokingly said he doesn't want to even be in the room when I give birth-he's really squeamish around doctors especially when he has watched me with them (ie in the ICU). He actually has ptsd from that time so I'm not making him come to anything he doesn't want to-my mom
will be with me for delivery so if he needs to leave he can.
