Baby Cereal

Our pediatrician gave us the go ahead to start our 4 month old on cereal. She said we could choose the type- rice, oatmeal, or barley. I'm looking for some pros and cons of each and what you all introduced first.

  • We're starting with oatmeal as many of our friends with kiddos a bit older said rice cereal caused constipation. Oatmeal has good amounts of protein and iron too which is great for growing babies. A friend recommended the Earths Best brand of baby oatmeal so we'll give that a try first.
  • With my first I cooked only whole-grain organic brown rice (and barley) and put it through a hand mill- separating out the hard grain and feeding LO the soft pudding-like part. I also made my own rice milk and fed it to him. I did not do this until he was seven months old. This time around, however, I am of a mind to start with fruits and vegetables, as I believe they will be easier on LO's digestion than grains.
I do not know your reasons for starting food at four months, and I respect everyone's personal choice. I just wanted to mention that I am choosing to delay solids because I believe it is best for the baby's digestive development. Anyone who is interested can google "delaying solids".
  • We started solids at 4 months because it was recommended by our pediatrician. He recommended oatmeal for us, so that's what we are doing. Rice is binding and we struggle with constipation as it is. So far she is doing really well with the oatmeal!

He actually recommended oatmeal now, veggies at 5 months, and fruits at 6 months. He suggested veggies before fruits because fruits first can make them develop a sweet tooth.
  • My doctor actually suggested alternating fruit and vegetables. I have heard the vegi before fruit, and I've also heard its a old wives tale. I have those mesh chewers, when are others planning on introducing them? I meant to ask the dr, but forgot at her last appt.
  • Breast milk and formula are already sweet...so starting with all veggies and no fruits doesn't really mean anything. I think it's just like an old wives tale that our moms were told so they tel us.
  • We did Earth's Best Organic Whole Grain Oatmeal Cereal first and will probably do the same with DS. Starting at 6 months though. It's iron-fortified and that's important for breast fed babies. Ditto to @marijaa333 for staying away from rice.

Actually our doctor was the one that told it to us. I don't know, maybe it is an old wives tale, but we are still sticking with the recommendations given to us by her doctor.

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer as long as they are ready for solids, just a matter of preference.

i did oat and barley w/ my first, dont remember which one first but i didnt use the other until the first box was done with. No problems with either. Prepared them with formula since that baby didnt get breast milk. When that box was gone he started veggies.
