Cries almost six hours straight!!!

hey mommas!

My LO is 4w 4d. Recently DS cries from about 4:00PM till bed 10:30PM. On and off but mostly on and he constantly has to be moved from mamaroo to activity gym to my chest and having his back patted. He fights sleeping and if I'm lucky he sleeps maybe thirty minutes if I move him off me. Anyone else experiencing something similar? Or do I just have a really fussy baby. It's very hard because my husband gets home from work and all the baby does is cry. It's to the point that he says if you don't put him upstairs I'm going upstairs. Help please!

Re: Cries almost six hours straight!!!

  • It is pretty common at that age. My LO is fussy during that time and it does suck when my H comes home to a fussy baby, but from what I read it is because they are over stimulated by that time of the day, it peaks at 6 weeks and gets better each passing day.

  • Thank you... Hate to say it because I don't want to speed up him growing but I am looking forward to the getting better stage
  • My LO is 4 weeks and has been doing the same thing for about a week except she usually is fussy from 10am-3pm.
  • Have you tried wearing him? Also, I have posted this before, but I find the noise of a bathroom exhaust fan calms my LO and did with DS too. Maybe a walk in the stroller? Car ride? Swing or vibrating chair? A bath?
  • Have you heard of the Wonder Weeks app? It explains different stages your baby will go through and 4.5 weeks is the first leap. The app is great because it explains each leap and ways to help baby through them.
  • Mine gets this way sometimes in the evenings. I swaddle her, lay her on her side on my lap with the paci, put white noice on my cell right by her head and pat her bottom. It works well to calm her down. Check out the happiest baby on the block book.
  • DS gets fussy in the evening, too. Another sound option to try is the vacuum cleaner. It usually puts our LO in a trance. We have Spotify on our phones and found playlists of vacuums, washers and dryers, fans, etc. just for babies. Those playlists help seal the deal, especially after a good swaddle and rocking motion.
  • Read Secrets of the Baby Whisperer. It really helped me understand how to figure out the reason for baby's crying. Sometimes it is something weird like a tiny hair wrapped tight around their toe. It also talks about what kind of routine you can use to get baby to sleep predictably.

Swaddle, walk around the house, then nurse lying down in the dark... That almost always puts my baby to sleep if she is tired and overstimulated. Worth a shot.
  • This sums up the first several months of my daughters life. Every single evening - It was truly exhausting. She started right from birth though. Thankfully DS is not so crazy. Hopefully yours is just a blip due to a growth spurt! Hang in there, if you've checked all the obvious things sometimes you've just got to ride it out. Sounds quite normal to me though!
  • My LO started doing this at 8 weeks (another wonder week so I hope its short lived), but I've found that taking him outside for a quiet stroll helps a lot. He immediately calms down. I only do that if its earlier in the day though, otherwise I swaddle and turn on white noise. We were doing baths as part of our bedtime routine, but I've noticed that seems to make it worse.

  • Same at our house. LO is fussy from about 5-8. He calms down but also needs to be moving around a lot and fights sleep. It seems pretty common I guess!
