Surprise twins?

I am only 18 weeks, but I am showing a LOT. My mom (who just saw me for the first time since I found out) is convinced in her gut I am having twins and said my belly confirmed it. I usually trust her, but... Wouldn't my doctor have caught it by now?! I can't believe I'm even entertaining this possibility. I have only had one ultrasound at just six weeks, so I suppose we could have missed something. But still!! Has anyone showed up for their anatomy scan and been surprised?! My scan is Monday!! We'll find out in two days I suppose!

Chances are if nothing came up on the first ultrasound, you'll only see a single baby in there on Monday.

  • It is possible that they missed one, but I don't think it's very common. Size doesn't always indicate multiples! They should be able to tell at your anatomy scan if there are two for sure!

  • That's highly uncommon and extremely unlikely. How much you're showing is no indication of how many babies you have in there- some people just show earlier than others. Unless your mom is medically trained, I'd ignore her because she's almost definitely wrong. I think people really forget what pregnancy is like and a lot of people just have no clue what a pregnant woman "should" look like at any stage. Like, for example, it's pretty common for people to get to 34 weeks and beyond (still well away from their due date) and hear, "You look like you're ready to pop any day!" and "You must be due tomorrow!" and that kind of thing.

  • Anything's possible, but I'd say it's probably pretty unlikely. I'm having twins and it was already super obvious at my 6 week ultrasound.

  • Thanks ladies, that makes me feel better. My husband wouldn't know what to do with himself!!! I have only gained ten pounds, but I do feel big and I'm showing a lot more than my friend who is due three days before me. It's probably just all those burritos and pizza, though!! It would be a surprise for sure.
  • FWIW, this is the only ultrasound we have. Only one yolk sac! I suppose they could be snuggling.... But I still think, probably not!
  • I know the feeling, my husband still hasn't recovered from the shock! We just found out the other day that it's 2 girls and my husband almost had to be scraped up off the floor, lol!

  • I went on Wed for my 19 week ultrasound thinking we were having a singleton. My doc hadn't said anything about being big, two heartbeats, anything. Twins don't run in either family. What a shocker for us when there were two. It's highly unlikely that they missed it at your first ultrasound (we hadn't had one before this), but it is possible for the doctor to have missed it from other exams. Good luck!

  • I'd say twins are highly unlikely at this point.
  • I know one person who that happened to but she had been going to a midwife and didn't have a scan until 20 weeks.

  • I'm showing way more than most girls I know who are as far along as I am and even than many girls who are further along than I am by a great deal. It's just the way you're showing. I've had two ultrasounds confirming that there's just one little girl in there. ;)
  • I usually get that when I'm pregnant, "there is no way there is only 1 baby in there, you're huge!" It's always one. Lol.

  • @davidroxie - your ultrasound was yesterday. What did they see?

  • It is, of course, technically possible...but pretty unlikely. My first ultrasound was at 7 weeks, and it was quite obvious there were two beans in there. And, like others have mentioned, size of your belly is not even a remotely reliable indicator. I'm finally showing at 18 weeks with two babies...while one of my girlfriends looks ready to pop at 25 weeks with a singleton (and was already very obviously pregnant at 16 weeks).
  • i'm really showing too. i know there is only one baby in there, my belly is just big. plain and simple. when i tell people i am only 16 weeks and they make the dreaded "twins" comment i'm just like, actually it's octuplets. nice guess though!
