Doctors Orders

Well I called the pediatrician yesterday about my LO being so fussy/crying between meals even though she was eating like every 45 minutes ALL day for about 3 days (I was ebf). This was abnormal for us. Plus she was awake most of these 3 days and would not sleep! On top of that she had a few green stools which is different than our normal seedy mustard ones. Our pedi recommended Gerber Soothe drops along with expressing milk and giving to LO in a bottle AND have my husband feed her to give me a break ;)

Anyway, for now we have a whole new baby. She is sleeping regularly again and is much more satisfied between meals. I don't think she was getting enough food "snacking" on my boob and falling asleep after a couple minutes only to wake up as soon as she came off...showing hunger signs again. This was a vicious cycle not to mention exhausting. Expressing milk and knowing exactly how much she is drinking helps. (We also bought a slow flow nipple to help pace her) Anyway, thought I would share just in case someone else was experiencing something similar.

  • This is me, I love EBF although it's getting exhausting because she is just not consolable- do you just express milk now? Do you feel like your missing out on BFing it's the only time she is calm is when attached to my boob lol but I just want her to be happy

I will still breastfeed if it's convenient when we are out and about only because I don't have a huge stash. I also felt she wasn't satisfied without the boob but it turned out we weren't giving her enough milk. (Most of the afternoon she will have like 2/2.5 oz but evenings she might have 4oz etc) last night when we gave her 4oz, guessing she was hungry, she got heavy eyes and went right to sleep! And whatever gets her to sleep well I'm on board with! I won't miss ebf just because I'll still BF her every now and again. She doesn't seem confused by boob vs bottle. She's just a hungry girl!

  • Have you tried a pacifier? I was against them at first but my girl would be on the boob all day if I let her. After she has ate and taken herself off I'll burp her and give her the paci and if she's spitting it out and still acting hungry I'll put her back to the breast after 10-15 minutes.

Yes I have tried a pacifier. She does not like them. I've tried different ones even. But she's a very happy girl now. I expressed and tracked how much she's eaten in one day. I think I was having a fore milk / hind milk imbalance.

  • I had the same issue as you. For my sanity I now just pump and bottle feed. Makes it easier on all of us
  • Starting this same sort of thing and I'm not thrilled :( went to the LC and he was doing great after that, now I'm thinking he isn't getting enough again and I can only feed on one side because the other is super sore and cracked a little, so I'm pumping that side (and only getting like 2-3 oz) and he would still seem hungry after eating, so I pumped both and apparently the side I've been feeding him off has only been producing like and ounce :(( So until I can get back to the LC, it's pumping, bottle feeding, and nipple cream....hopefully that will be enough time for my supply to get better during pumping/feeding and I'll be able to breastfeed with both sides and he'll be getting enough. He'll be 3 weeks tomorrow, how much are you ladies with LOs around the same age getting when pumping?
  • ^^Right now not a lot to be honest. About 4 oz every 20 min pump session. But soon I'll be ahead of the game because she doesn't eat that much every two hours. I'm religiously pumping every two hrs.
  • Ugh, we gave him a bottle with 5 ounces in it and he ate 4 of them...it's so frustrating to not know for sure how much he gets I feed him. Or when I try to pump and he's up screaming cause he's hungry.....which then turns into just feeding him and worrying about pumping next time around :-S
  • This is me too. Ds isnt the best nurser. Ive struggled with lower supply. Latch issues. Engorged boobs. Blocked ducts..you name it and in the past month ive had it lol. He isnt a strong nurser so he doesnt completely empty my boobs so i switch of between boob and pump each feeding time. Bf'ing can be emotionally draining but i dont want to strictly EP either.

    Blessed  <3o:)
  • Our LO is 2 weeks old now and we are fighting the same battle.  She wants to constantly eat and I am just mentally, physically and emotionally drained so the pediatrician recommended I start pumping and giving bottles every now and then.  It's made a huge difference.  I've realized I don't produce much.  If I double pump I'm lucky to get 3 oz total.  That said, LO was never getting full!  The bottles have helped a bunch. And now that my husband can help feed it's taken a weight off my shoulder and I've regained some sanity!
