C-Section and Stairs

hi ladies,
I have a scheduled C section booked and this is my first baby. When we return home how easy will stairs be? We live in an older home with only one bathroom that is upstairs. If I am careful and slow will I be able to go up and down stairs to use the washroom?!

Thanks!!!

Re: C-Section and Stairs

  • No experience but from what I have heard I wouldn't plan on it for the first week or so. However you should be in hospital for 5 days anyway. So maybe don't plan on it for the next 2-3 days+ when you get home. Can you hang out upstairs for that time? There is just no way of knowing how recovering will go but you don't want to force it and risk even more injury. Could have someone get you breakfast in am. Stock some stuff for lunch or mini fridge ? Someone bring you dinner? Just for a few days if needed?

  • When I had my son, born via c-section, I lived in the basement of a house where the kitchen and living room as well as the entrance were on the main floor. So stairs.

I was in the hospital 4 days, and by day 5, I had no issue with stairs. I'd set your upstairs area up so you don't have to go downstairs much. You'll probably want to be close to the bathroom, but obviously, you'll still need to eat and drink . . . Maybe keep a stash of snacks upstairs, and have your SO help you get meals together so you don't have to use the stairs much the first couple days. However, you should probably be fine going up and down the stairs a couple times a day, very slowly.

  • I was just talking about this with a coworker who has a 4 month old.  Her doctor told her no stairs for 2 weeks, but she said had to use stairs since her bedroom was upstairs.  Just go slow.  I wouldn't recommend carrying the baby up the stairs though.
  • With DS, I had a scheduled c-section and by the time we got home from the hospital, stairs were not a proble (we were in a 3-story townhouse at the time!). I was super worried about it, too. I think that planning ahead and being prepared to push yourself a bit goes a long way toward a quick recovery. Get up and moving as quickly as you can after having baby and you'll likely be just fine. Good luck!
  • I too was in a 3-story townhouse at the time when I had my son via c-section. By the time I left the hospital stairs weren't a problem. I did not walk up them holdings he baby. More difficult than the stairs was sleeping. It is very hard to lay down and sit up. I slept in a recliner for a week. You should be ok with the stairs.
  • Like others, stairs weren't a problem for me after leaving the hospital. I did go slowly and did not carry DD on them for a while. Now getting in and out of bed was another story! Our bed at the time was tall and I couldn't get in or out without a ton of pain. I slept downstairs in the recliner for a few weeks.
  • I just got home today after csection on Tuesday. I can't do stairs. I'm still in a ton of pain. My csection was worse than normal because of my previa though. They had to do additional cutting and stitching in my uterus to get the placenta out and stop the bleeding. So maybe that's why I'm in so much more pain than what I read about. Idk. Can't wait till I'm feeling better though. Even sitting on the toilet is still excruciating.
  • Ill be honest, for my first , we had csection. I was in hospital for 3 days after. I dont remember the stairs hurting. But i do remember the trouble getting in and out of bed. We took mattress off the box spring and just slept on the mattress.
