Hcg levels anyone?

I'm supposed to be 4w4d today. I had my blood drawn yesterday and my levels were lower than I was hoping for. 129. My progesterone level was excellent. Anyone else having low #s?

*I'm probably stressing more than I should be, but we've been TTC FOR 16 months and already suffered 1 loss...so yes...I'm stressing til I can see a little baby heartbeat :(

Re: Hcg levels anyone?

  • All that matters is whether your numbers double, no the actual number itself. You may just have ovulated a little later than you think. My first beta was 81 (13dpiui), and the second was 221 (15dpiui).
  • Loading the player...
  • Unfortunately, it doesn't look like they're having me come back in for another blood test to ensure they doubled :( So I still won't be seen until the 25th.  Ughhhh this waiting game is so the worst. :(:(

  • My first beta and what I believe was 11dpo was only 24.8 ( my re's commnets "well you have to start somewhere"!!) went back 4 days later it was 220 ( 29 hour doubling time) they said it was awesome...a week after that my levels were 5850 and we saw gestastional sac and yolk sac dating 5w4d, which is only 1 day off my LMP.  Like the pp have said one number means nothing, doubling is what does.  I would ask for another set. Good luck!!
  • I should be about 17 dpo.  This doesn't sound promising.  The PA said "just keep your fingers crossed and we'll see you on the 25th".  I feel like my OB is going to get super sick of me...but I'd really like to go back Monday for another draw.  They're going to be annoyed with me but I think I have a right to ask for another one?!  They know all about my earlier loss :/
  • Like PP have said, the number has to start somewhere, and one number can't tell you much. What it does within 48-72 hours will. From one loss mama to another, I'm sorry. I would personally ask to have another drawn for peace of mind, but if you feel like you can wait, then wait. My only successful pregnancy, my level started at 17 at 3 weeks, 5 days. I got them checked every 48 for the first week just to make sure we were heading in the right direction.

  • At 4 weeks my Beta was 105 and at 4 weeks 3 days it was 335.

  • My doctor doesn't check any numbers. Not sure what the point of that is...... not like you could prevent anything anyway. First visit is 8 wks, then 12 wks for nuchal.

I was on CD 32 19 DPO when I found out this was on August 24th. I had blood drawn that day and my hcg was 40. My doctor said I must only be a week pregnant. But, I was charting and taking ovulation tests so I was concerned that something was wrong. This week I had my first ultrasound I thought I was 6w 5d. Turns out I'm only 5w 3 d. I somehow ovulated later than I thought and really did find out when I was 8 days pregnant. Try not to stress.
  • My first beta was 84 on 15dpo, 167 on 17dpo. It just depends on that it's doubling, definitely go back and get another test to put your mind at ease
  • @babyparn I meant to tell you, don't worry about annoying them. You are the patient and if it would make you feel better, get another level drawn (you're paying for it!) I don't think it's crazy to ask for another at all.

  • My levels Wednesday we're 1134 and 13, they think I'm 4-5 weeks right now. I had second set drawn this AM
  • My levels at 4 weeks 1 day were 184, and 4 weeks 3 days were 458.  I think sometimes people put too much emphasis on the actual number, instead of whether it doubles or not.  The ranges for "normal" hcg levels are so large that it's unfair for us to judge our numbers against other people's numbers, we will only scare ourselves or start to think our numbers suddenly aren't normal! Just focus on whether it doubles :)
  • When I made my appointment for 6 weeks the nurse told me they would probably draw blood to check my levels. Why would they do that at 6 weeks and not do at least two draws? Is that just to confirm pregnancy?
  • @JessicaB0627 the way my office described it is I had to have hcg levels over 5,000 before they would schedule an ultrasound - they only did one draw, too. I'm wondering if your office does something similar.
  • I'm really surprised your OB wouldn't bother with a second test, especially since you've had a loss. The initial number itself doesn't mean anything except yes, right now you are pregnant. Try to relax! I had a loss myself right before this pregnancy, and the paranoia is neverending. I even got a nice doubling on my betas, and I'm still fretting myself to pieces.

I would say, if you don't feel comfortable with your OB (i.e. feeling like they would be annoyed with you if you call with concerns or want to get checked out further), then you might want to try a different office? Later on in your pregnancy, you need to be comfortable with contacting your doctor any time you sense something is wrong. I've heard many heartbreaking stories of women who stayed home because they didn't want to bother the doctor or annoy the ER nurses or look like silly panicky FTMs, only to find out too late that something really was wrong. You need to have confidence that they will take your concerns seriously, no matter how small, and that starts now. Your doctor just waving his hand and basically saying "meh, if you're still preggo on the 25th, I'll concern myself with you then" is unacceptable, especially when you have legitimate reason to be worried.

Just my feeling on that issue! :) Good luck, girl, I know exactly how you feel. Happy and healthy 9 months to you!
  • Thanks everyone for the thoughts!!  I called my OB and she put the orders in for me :) .  The math I used said I needed to be right around 1000 to be on track.  I got my results back way early this morning and they were over 2800!!!  More than doubling!! :):):)

Thank the Lord!!  I'm feeling much better :) My OB is great, she just didn't seem overly concerned with my numbers to begin with.  She's truly amazing, allowed me to have the perfect labor and delivery and I do love her, but sometimes I think she's just a little lax.  No worries, I'm super happy with these results and now can actually wait til the 25th for my first appointment :):)

  • I'm 5 weeks today. I think my hcg levels might be low, but I'm not sure.

I got a positive pregnancy test on Tues morning (digital test), and went to see my OB Wed afternoon. The did a urine pregnancy test at the office and the line was very faint. I'm not sure what that means - should I be concerned?

They did some blood work, and scheduled me for more work tomorrow (two days later). They said they wanted to make sure my hcg levels are progressing normally. Based on this thread, it seems like standard practice to do recurring blood work early on and not something they just do if something may be wrong?

I'm trying not to worry unnecessarily. This is my first pregnancy, if it wasn't obvious. :)
  • Just reading this whole thread, I find it really interesting that there is a such a large range of normal betas.  In past pregnancies, I have never had betas drawn but since this pregnancy was the first month after a loss, my doctor drew labs to confirm it is a new pregnancy and not left over from my miscarriage.  At 4w4d (estimated based on the size of the gestational sac seen on ultrasound), my beta was 1558 and my progesterone was 22.  I think the large range of normal leads for extra anxiety!

  • Mine were 32,000 at 6w1d and I was surprised to see levels so high! Anyone else have any that were that high? Most that I'm seeing are below 10,000

I have miscarried twice and now im pregnant again. On 9-8-15 my hcg was 22, 9-12-15 it was 470 and yesterday 9-16-15 it is 2475. Dose this sound ok to be about 5weeks pregnant? In one week it went from being really low to kinda high im not sure if its normal and my doctor isn't easy to talk to.
